Organizations Filed Purposes:
THE MISSION OF OCHS IS TO PROVIDE HUMANE EDUCATION, PROMOTE ANIMAL ELFARE LEGISLATION, ADVOCATE FOR AND FACILLITATE PET STERILLIZATION AND RESCUE, SHELTER AND PROMOTE ADOPTION OF ABANDONED ANIMALS.
MANAGEMENT OF CITY OF STARKVILLE ANIMAL SHELTER - OCHS MANAGES UNDER CONTRACT FROM THE CITY OF STARKVILLE, THE ANIMAL SHELTER FOR STARKVILLE. THE CITY PROVIDES ANIMAL CONTROL OFFICERS WHO ASSIT THE PUBLIC WITH ISSUES RELATED TO ANIMAL WELFARE AND ENFORCEMENT OF THE CITY OF STARKVILLE ANIMLA CONTROL ORDINANCES. THE ANIMAL SHELTER SERVES AS A HOLDING PLACE FOR COURT CASE ANIMALS AS WELL AS SERING AS A PLACE FOR THE PUBLIC TO SURRENDER OR ADOPT ANIMALS. OCHS HIRES AND SUPERISES FULL-TIME AND PART-TIME STAFF MEMBERS TO OPERATE THE SHELTER. THE SHELTER RECEIVES INCOME FROM ITS CITY CONTRACT, OKTIBBEHA COUNTY, AND THE ADOPTION FEES FOR ANIMALS. IN 2020, THE SHELTER TOOK IN APPROXIMATLEY 1,146 DOGS AND 1,079 CATS. IN 2020, WE ADOPTED 269 DOGS AND 376 CATS FROM OUR SHELTER. IN ADDITION, APPROXIMATELY 619 DOGS AND 249 CATS FROM OUR SHELTER WERE SENT ON OUR OWN TRANSPORT PROGRAMS OUTSIDE THE STATE OF MISSISSIPPI FOR ADOPTION. OUR SHELTER HAS A 97.7% LIVE-RELEASE RATE FOR ANIMALS REUNITED WITH OWNERS, ADOPTED, OR SENT HOME TRANSPORT.
TRANSPORT PROGRAM - IN 2020 OCHS CONTINUED ITS TRANSPORT PROGRAM THROUGH GRANTS FUNDED IN 2019. THESE GRANTS, FUNDED BY PETSMART CHARATIES AND ASPCA, PROVIDE FOR TRANSPORTATION OF ANIMALS FROM THE CITY OF STARKVILLE ANIMAL SHELTER AND PARTNERING SHELTERS IN SURROUNDING COUNTIES TO SHELTERS IN LOCATIONS WHERE ANIMALS ARE SCARCE. THE PANDEMIC PROHIBITED PARTS OF 2020 BUT WE ARE STILL ABLE TO TRANSPORT 1,849 DOGS AND 532 CATS FROM OUR SHELTER AND OUR PARTNER SHELERS TO THE NORTHEAST.
LOW COST SPAY /NEUTER PROGRAM - IN 2020 OCHS CONTINUED TO RECIEVE FUNDING FOR A MOBLE VETERINARY UNIT FOR USE IN ITS LOW-COST SPAY/NEUTER PROGRAM FOR LOW-INCOME COMMUNITY MEMBERS. THE FIDO FIXER VAN WAS USED IN THE FIRST PART OF 2020 UNTIL WE WERE ABLE TO PARNER WITH MISSISSIPPI STATE UNNIVERSITY VET SCHOOL TO PLACE A MOBILE SURGERY UNIT ON SITE AT OUR SHELTER IN MID 2020 AND TO HIRE OUR OWN VETERINARIAN THROUGH THIS PARTNERSHIP. WE CONTINUE TO OFFER SURGEIES FOR MODEST COST TO COMMUNITY MEMBERS FOR CLIENTS OF THIS PROGRAM. IN ADDITION, WE PROVIDE FERAL CAT COLONY TRAP/NEUTE/RELEASE PROGRAMS IN OUR COUNTY. IN 2020, THIS PROGRAM AIDED IN THE SPAY/NEUTER OF 703 OF OUR SHELTER ANIMALS AS WELL AS 516 OWNED ANIMALS IN OUR COMMUNITY AND 215 FERAL CATS.
