Organizations Filed Purposes: GALLATIN VALLEY LAND TRUST CONNECTS PEOPLE, COMMUNITIES, AND OPEN LANDS THROUGH CONSERVATION OF WORKING FARMS AND RANCHES, HEALTHY RIVERS, WILDLIFE HABITAT, AND THE CREATION OF TRAILS IN THE MONTANA HEADWATERS OF THE MISSOURI AND UPPER YELLOWSTONE RIVERS.

Land Conservation GVLT furthered its mission to conserve working farms and ranches, wildlife habitat, and river corridors in the Gallatin Valley. We identify strategic areas with high conservation values and work to conserve blocks of open land that protect special parts of the valley. We hold 112 conservation easements covering 48,999 acres. Our staff develop long-term relationships with landowners and visit each conservation easement annually to monitor their condition and partner with landowners on restoration projects to improve eroding streambanks, plant vegetation, and enhance floodplains. In FY20 we conserved 1,324 acres of land in the West Gallatin, Big Sky, and Churchill areas. We also diversified our conservation tools by purchasing a unique property adjoining the Middle Cottonwood trailhead to meet both conservation and recreation priorities as part of a new, integrated project model.

Community Trails - GVLTs Community Trails Program continued to connect people, communities, and the land through collaborative trail projects. In 30 years GVLT has helped create over 80 miles of trail. This year the Path to the M was built, largely funded by a $3.4MM grant GVLT helped secure from the Federal Lands Access Program, to provide a safe route for pedestrians and bicyclists to get from town to two popular trailheads, the College M and Drinking Horse Mountain. This connects Bozemans Main Street to public land in the Bridger Mountains, completing the Main Street to the Mountains vision of GVLTs founder. Our Trails staff worked with 29 volunteer groups to maintain community trails at Drinking Horse, Triple Tree, Painted Hills, Story Mill Spur Trail, Peets Hill, Kirk Hill, and Highland Glen. They also updated kiosk trail maps and a community trail map for publication.

Education GVLT shares monthly news with 15,000 supporters on community trails, private land conservation, and related public events. GVLT publishes audited financial statements, IRS Form 990, and an annual report on the website. The 22 young professionals on the NextGen Advisory Board educate and inspire their peers to volunteer and support GVLT. We joined local land use planning efforts to highlight trail systems and natural resource protection. GVLT hosted 437 volunteers for 1,627 hours of service and educated them all on GVLTs mission and accomplishments. We adapted our free Discovery Walks series into a virtual format and encouraged people to use trails during the Covid-19 quarantine. The Summer Trails Challenge engaged over 1,700 community members to log 58,000 miles of trail use in three weeks.
