GYC'S LANDS PROGRAM IS FOCUSED ON CONSERVING THE MOST CRITICAL PARTS OF THIS LANDSCAPE AND PROTECTING KEY LANDS FROM HARMFUL PROPOSALS. GYC'S CURRENT PRIORITIES INCLUDE PROTECTING LANDS FROM PROPOSED GOLD MINES, SECURING NEW PROTECTIONS FOR LANDS IN CRUCIAL WILDLIFE HABITAT SUCH AS WINTER RANGES AND MIGRATION CORRIDORS, AND SAFEGUARDING CORE GRIZZLY BEAR HABITAT. SINCE 1983, GYC HAS LED CAMPAIGNS THAT HAVE PROTECTED MILLIONS OF ACRES FROM ENERGY DEVELOPMENT, MINING, AND OTHER ACTIVITIES. GYC WORKS WITH DIVERSE STAKEHOLDERS IN MONTANA, WYOMING, AND IDAHO AND ACROSS THE COUNTRY TO SUPPORT POLICIES THAT CONSERVE CRITICAL PUBLIC AND PRIVATE LANDS.
WILDLIFE PROTECTION - GREATER YELLOWSTONE IS HOME TO ONE OF THE MOST REMARKABLE ASSEMBLAGES OF WILDLIFE ROUND ON EARTH. GYC PLAYS A LEAD ROLE IN CONSERVING THE REGION'S ICONIC WILDLIFE, WITH A FOCUS ON GRIZZLY BEARS, BISON, AND MIGRATING HERDS OF ELK, PRONGHORN, AND MULE DEER. GYC IS A LEADER IN PRESERVING LONG-DISTANCE WILDLIFE MIGRATIONS BY PROTECTING HABITAT IN CORRIDORS, CONSTRUCTING WILDLIFE FRIENDLY FENCES, AND ADVOCATING FOR WILDLIFE CROSSING STRUCTURES ON HIGHWAYS. OUR CURRENT PRIORITIES INCLUDE REDUCING CONFLICT BETWEEN PEOPLE AND CARNIVORES THROUGH ON-THE-GROUND PARTNERSHIPS AND INNOVATIVE POLICIES, PROTECTING CORE HABITAT FOR GRIZZLY BEARS AND ENSURING BEARS IN THE GREATER YELLOWSTONE CAN CONNECT TO BEARS IN OTHER PARTS OF THE NORTHERN ROCKIES, AND RESTORING BISON TO THEIR ANCESTRAL HOMELANDS ON TRIBAL AND SELECT PUBLIC LANDS IN THE REGION AND BEYOND.
WATER PROTECTION GREATER YELLOWSTONE'S STREAMS AND RIVERS ARE THE FOUNTAINHEAD OF THE WEST. GYC PROTECTS THE REGION'S WILD, FREE FLOWING RIVERS FROM NEW DAMS, DIVERSIONS, AND INDUSTRIAL POLLUTION. SINCE 2009, GYC HAS SECURED PERMANENT PROTECTIONS FOR NEARLY 500 MILES OF WILD RIVERS IN GREATER YELLOWSTONE. CURRENTLY, GYC IS WORKING WITH A COALITION OF BUSINESSES, THOUSANDS OF CITIZENS, AND OUR NON-PROFIT PARTNERS TO PROTECT OVER 330 MILES OF STREAMS AND RIVERS IN MONTANA THROUGH FEDERAL LEGISLATION. GYC ALSO PARTNERS WITH UNIVERSITY SCIENTISTS AND OTHER ACROSS THE REGION TO UNDERSTAND HOW CLIMATE CHANGE WILL IMPACT GREATER YELLOWSTONE'S WATER AND OTHER IMPORTANT RESOURCES, INCLUDING ITS HUMAN COMMUNITIES. WITH THIS UNDERSTANDING, GYC WORKS TO HELP THE REGION'S NATURAL AND HUMAN COMMUNITIES ADAPT TO CHANGE AND ULTIMATELY BE MORE RESILIENT.
