Center Pole's mission is to build knowledge, justice, opportunity, prosperity, and sovereignty in Native communities and to preserve and protect indigenous knowledge and ways.
Food Sovereignty/Healthy Food Systems/Sustainability: Establishment of a healthy foods hub allowing greater food access in the rural reservation "food desert." The hub includes a food bank, a healthy foods cafe, a food recovery project rescuing about 2 million lbs. of expired food a year from neighboring urban areas and redistributing it to the impoverished community; a program that serves meals made from the food recovery to the hungry in the community with a delivery to elders; and an educational program that promotes healthy lifestyles and teaches nutrition, natural farming, hunting, gathering wild plants and medicine and the preparation of traditional foods. An Indigenous Discovery Center is in the process of development to be a learning and training center for food sovereignty, energy sustainability, land stewardship and indigenous knowledge. During 2019 1,250,000 lbs of food was donated to this organization for distribution to Tribal communities.
Social Enterprise/Workforce Training: Reservation youth, young adults and families are trained in workforce, business skills and life skills at our social enterprises that include a coffee roasting business, a community radio station, a resale shop, a cafe and gift shop and cultural tourism projects. Interns learn about creating non-profit organizations and businesses, money management skills and setting personal, educational and career goals.
Youth Development and Leadership: Youth participate in enrichment activities that include Crow language, history and heritage; wilderness skills; Native skills; Native games; literacy and academic enrichment; community radio; life skills, sustainable living and other leadership activities. Successful youth participate in educational programs beyond the reservation and are assisted with college and career opportunities. Youth are mentored in the Crow cultural way, taught skills to cope with historical trauma, are provided tools to make change in the communities and learn to be successful in the global environment. 3600 reservation youth participated in Center Pole activities.
