BRVHS OPERATES AND SUPPORTS THE RAVALLI COUNTY MUSEUM IN THE A.J. GIBSON COURTHOUSE BUILT IN 1900. THE MUSEUM IS STAFFED AND OPEN TO THE PUBLIC YEAR ROUND WITH ROTATING AND PERMANENT EXHIBITS AND EDUCATION PROGRAMMING THAT FOCUSES ON LOCAL HISTORY, ART, AND NATURAL HISTORY. IT PRESERVES ARCHIVES AND ARTIFACTS THAT NUMBER IN THE TENS OF THOUSANDS MAKING THESE ITEMS ACCESSIBLE ALLOWS US TO REACH INTO THE PART AND SHARE THE LANDSCAPE OF HISTORY OF OUR VALLEY AND REGION FROM PAST TO PRESENT DAY. WE ARE ABLE TO HIGHLIGHT EVENTS THAT STRIKE A CHORD WITH OUR PUBLIC. OUR ADMISSION FEE IS NOMINAL AND THURSDAY AND SATURDAY ARE FREE DAYS. THE MUSEUM SERVES THE ENTIRE REGION, A DIVERSE POPULATION, ATTRACTS TOURISTS, AND AVERAGES 18,000 VISITORS A YEAR.

THE MUSEUM IS AN EDUCATIONAL VENUE WITH GUIDED AND INDIVIDUAL OPPORTUNITIES TO EXPLORE THE RICH HISTORY OF THE BITTER ROOT. WE INVITE OUR GUESTS TO EXPERIENCE OUR HISTORY THROUGH ACTIVITIES, EVENTS, TOURS, AND EXHIBITS. WE ARE UTILIZED BY THE SCHOOLS IN OUR VALLEY AND BY THOUSANDS OF SCHOOL AGE CHILDREN. FREE FAMILY ACTIVITIES ARE OFFERED EVERY SATURDAY MORNING THAT FOCUSES ON S.T.E.A.M. CONCEPTS AND COMPLEMENT OUR CURRENT EXHIBITS. WE HAVE ANNUAL CULTURAL HERITAGE EVENTS THAT ENCOURAGE THE COMMUNITY TO PARTICIPATE IN THE LIVING HISTORY THAT REINFORCES OUR SENSE OF PLACE. IN 2019, WE FEATURED THREE NEW EXHIBITS: "EXPLORING THE CAVES OF MONTANA", "OUTBREAK: EPIDEMICS IN A CONNECTED WORLD" IN PARTNERSHIP WITH THE SMITHSONIAN & ROCKY MOUNTAIN LAB, AND "INDIGENOUS POTTERY OF THE SOUTHWEST. WE UPGRADED THE LIGHTING AND SEATING IN OUR UPSTAIRS GALLERIES FOR IMPROVED VIEWING, ACCESSIBILITY, AND COMFORT.

THE CONSERVATION AND PRESERVATION OF OUR ARTIFACTS, DOCUMENTS, AND OBJECTS IS OUR HIGHEST PRIORITY. BUT EQUALLY ESSENTIAL IS MAKING THESE COLLECTIONS AND RESOURCES USER-FRIENDLY TO THE PUBLIC. THESE COLLECTIONS INSPIRE THE CREATION OF COMPELLING EXHIBITS THAT LEAD TO EXPERIENTIAL LEARNING AND A SHARED UNDERSTANDING OF OUR PAST. WITH THE CONTINUED SUPPORT OF DONORS, FOUNDATIONS, AND THE PEOPLE OF OUR COMMUNITIES, WE SHAPE OUR EDUCATIONAL COMPONENTS, ENHANCE OUR COLLECTION CAPACITY THROUGH TRAINING AND DEVELOPMENT OF STAFF, AND CONTINUE TO BUILD THE MUSEUM AS A VITAL RESOURCE FOR OUR AREA.
