The Water Forum supports agriculture, community and recreation by protecting, enhancing and restoring the Bitterroot Watershed through on the ground restoration projects and watershed education.
The Water Forum brings the community together to protect, enhance, and restore the Bitterroot watershed.
Watershed Education-Reached more than 370 youth and 150 adults with hands on, experiential education. Programs included, the "Bitterroot River Clean up" an annual event and educational experience that brings the community together to better understand the importance of of watershed health and stewardship; "Earth Stwardship Program" a partnership with four local schools that engages hundreds of 7th graders throughout the school year, providing classroom lessons and field trips; Realtor training courses on water rights and stream health; "Clean Up All Year", a reusable trash bag program to encourage river stewardship every day; and presentations to community groups.
Watershed restoration project and design; Completed restoration work with a ranching family on Miller Creek to improve water quality and the fishery. The project helped to recreate a healthy riparian area by adding native shrubs and willows to the streanbank, providing shade and habitat, and installing fencing that will keep cattle and deer out of the stream while protecting plants. Monitoring and maintenance will continue for at least three years. Worked with Geum Environmental Consulting and the Hamilton Park Director to develop a design for restoration at the Skalkaho Bend Park; implementation planned for 2021.
Landowner Outreach, Project and Program Development To continue building on successes for community driven restoration, time is spent developing quality relationships with landowners and visiting potential restoration sites. In 2019, Water Forum staff developed proposals and secured funding for projects that will identify ways to improve water supply management and the fishery, in partnership with local irrigators and conservation partners; improve grazing management and stream health along a ranch on the Burnt Fork; improve fish passage and reduce sediment delivery to Wheelbarrow Creek, a tributary to sediment-laden Threemile Creek; implement a planting project to reduce erosian and help preserve a city park along the Bitterroot River, and improve shading and reduce sediment delivery along a FAS on the Bitterroot River in partnership with MT FWP.
