TO ADVANCE JUSTICE AND EQUALITY FOR INDIGENOUS PEOPLES IN THE AMERICAS.

GENERAL PROGRAM - PROVIDED LEGAL AND ADVOCACY ASSISTANCE TO INDIAN NATIONS AND INDIGENOUS COMMUNITIES THAT ARE WORKING TO PRESERVE THEIR LANDS, ENVIRONMENTS, CULTURES, AND OTHER HUMAN RIGHTS. THIS INCLUDED ASSISTING AND TRAINING NATIVE LEADERS TO USE INTERNATIONAL HUMAN RIGHTS LAW AND MECHANISMS TO ADVOCATE FOR INDIGENOUS RIGHTS; LEGAL AND FACTUAL RESEARCH AND ANALYSIS; WRITING, HEARINGS, PUBLIC SPEAKING AND OTHER COMMUNICATIONS EFFORTS TO BRING ATTENTION TO INDIGENOUS RIGHTS AND HUMAN RIGHTS VIOLATIONS AND TO SERVE AS RESOURCES FOR MEDIA, LAW SCHOOLS AND EDUCATIONAL PROGRAMS.

MDB INVESTMENTS AND INDIGENOUS PEOPLES IN SOUTH AMERICA - ADVOCATED FOR STRONGER POLICIES AND INTERNATIONAL LEGAL STANDARDS TO IMPROVE THE TRANSPARENCY AND ACCOUNTABILITY OF MULTILATERAL AND NATIONAL DEVELOPMENT BANKS TO PREVENT THESE FINANCIAL INSTITUTIONS FROM INVESTING IN CULTURALLY AND ENVIRONMENTALLY HARMFUL DEVELOPMENT PROJECTS. IN 2019, WE CONTINUED TO PUSH THE INTERAMERICAN DEVELOPMENT BANK TO STRENGTHEN ITS SOCIAL AND ENVIRONMENTAL POLICY FRAMEWORK AND, EVENTUALLY, SUCCEEDED IN GETTING THE IDB TO HOLD DEDICATED CONSULTATIONS WITH INDIGENOUS PEOPLES AS PART OF ITS POLICY REVIEW PROCESS.

BRAZIL PROJECT - IN 2019, WE FORMALIZED A NEW PROJECT TO ASSIST AND TRAIN INDIGENOUS PEOPLES IN THE BRAZILIAN AMAZON TO USE INTERNATIONAL PROCESSES AND FORUMS, SUCH AS HUMAN RIGHTS BODIES AND MECHANISMS, CLIMATE CHANGE CONFERENCES, AND OTHER ADVOCACY ARENAS. WE ARE ADVISING AND HELPING INDIGENOUS LEADERS AND REPRESENTATIVES CARRY OUT AN INTERNATIONAL ADVOCACY CAMPAIGN AND STRATEGY THAT PUTS DIPLOMATIC, ECONOMIC, AND OTHER FORMS OF PRESSURE ON THE GOVERNMENT OF BRAZIL TO STOP THE EXPANSION OF AGRICULTURE AND OTHER UNSUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT IN THE AMAZON AND THE WEAKENING OF INSTITUTIONS AND REGULATIONS THAT PROTECT INDIGENOUS PEOPLES IN BRAZIL.
