To bring STEM studies to Flathead Valley, Montana schools by giving students the tools to become innovative in science, technology, engineering, and math.
We supported the 10 school districts in enhancing their physics education by providing guest lectures and demonstrations in the physics of flight and aerospace engineering principles for aircraft and rockets to Middle School students. We worked with over 600 students. When the COVID 19 virus hit and schools closed, we changed our method of support. At the request of teachers, we created videos which were put on-line so students could view them from home via zoom. Students performed hands-on experiments with STEM provided materials that the parents picked up at school for home use.
One of our key programs is establishing a STEM Resource Library that schools use to enhance their STEM curriculum. We purchased lab kits and supplies that can be checked out and used by the teacher to give the students hands-on lab experience. Our ability to purchase the full number of kits needed was hampered by the COVID 19 virus. Once it hit, donations plunged and we were unable to reach our goals.
Prior to COVID 19, we had volunteers give guest lectures and demonstration to students of 5 schools. Topics included the design and development of a new class of aircraft and the physics it exploited to achieve high speed and low fuel consumption, atomic physics and spectra, the physics of waves and how they relate to sound and light. Once the virus hit, this activity stopped. Plans for a 2021 restart were made.
