CONNECTING ART, CULTURE AND COMMUNITY THROUGH EDUCATION, ADVOCACY AND CELEBRATION.
THE MAIN ACTIVITIES OF THE MISSOULA CULTURAL COUNCIL, DBA ARTS MISSOULA FOR THE FISCAL YEAR WERE:SISTER CITY PARTNERSHIP WITH NECKARGEMUEND, GERMANY AND PALMERSTON NORTH, NEW ZEALAND. THE SISTER CITY PROGRAM IS PROMOTE CITIZEN DIPLOMACY, ON INDIVIDUAL AND ONE COMMUNITY AT A TIME. THE MAIN EVENTS ARE GERMANFEST AND NEW ZELAND DAYS. IN THE FALL OF 2019, ARTS MISSOULA'S NEW INITIATIVE ENTITLED 'CULTURE AND LANDGUAGE IMMERSION PROGRAM'(CLIP)SAW ITS FIRST LONG-TERM EXCHANGE FOR A NEW ZEALAND FAMILY STAYED WITH A MISSOULA FAMILY FOR 6 WEEKS. IN JANUARY 2020, THE GLOBAL AND CULTURAL AFFAIRS DIRECTOR VISITED NECKARGEMUEND AND MET WITH CITY OFFICIALS TO INTRODUCE 'CLIP' AND TO FOSTER CULTURAL EXCHANGE BETWEEN THE TWO CITIES. WITH THE ADVENT OF COVID-19 THERE HAVE BEEN NO FURTHER EXCHANGES. THE OFFICE OF GLOBAL AND CULTURAL AFFAIRS DEVELOPS LOCAL PROGRAMMING PROMOTING CULTURAL DIPLOMACY. THIS INCLUDES A MONTHLY "WORLD VIEW FILM SERIES", A FREE COMMUNITY SCREENING FROM A DIFFERENT PART OF THE WORLD THAT FOCUSES ON HOW THE ARTS ARE INTEGRAL TO OTHER CULTURES. IN 2019, WE INTRODUCED THE "INTERNATIONAL SPEAKER SERIES," FEATURING LOCAL CITIZENS WHO HAVE TRAVELED ABROAD AND TELLING OF THEIR EXPERIENCES. THIS POSITION ALSO DEVELOPS INTERCULTURAL SEMINARS AND WORKSHOPS. WITH COVID-19, ALL IN PERSON CLASS TRAININGS WERE CANCELED. WE HAVE CONTINUED WITH REMOTE CLASSES AND A NEW PODCAST - "INTERNATIONAL VOICES" ON A MONTHLY BASIS. THE PODCASTS ARE AVAILABLE AT WWW.ARTSMISSOULA.ORG.SPARK! ARTS IGNITE LEARNING; THE LOCAL ARTS EDUCATION INITIATIVE OF THE KENNEDY CENTER FOR THE PERFORMING ARTS' ANY GIVEN CHILD PROGRAM, PARTNERING WITH CITY OF MISSOULA, MISSOULA COUNTY PUBLIC SCHOOLS, UM COLLEGE OF VISUAL AND PERFORMING ARTS, AND OTHER ARTS, BUSINESS, EDUCATION AND PHILANTHROPIC LEADERS. ARTS MISSOULA IS THE HOME AND FISCAL AGENT FOR THIS INITIATIVE. COVID-19 SUSPENDED ALL IN CLASS TEACHING ARTIST VISITS, AS WELL AS ENHANCEMENTS TO ARTS ACTIVITIES IN THE COMMUNITY. SPARK! ADJUSTED BY PROVIDING ART KITS TO LOW INCOME STUDENTS IN THE SPRING AND SUMMER, AND HAS FOCUSED REMOTE LESSONS ON SOCIAL AND EMOTIONAL LEARNING THROUGH THE ARTS IN ALL K-8 CLASSROOMS.FIRST NIGHT MISSOULA, NEW YEAR'S EVE COMMUNITY-WIDE, ALCOHOL-FREE CELEBRATION OF THE ARTS IS NOW THE LARGEST SINGLE EVENT PRODUCED BY ARTS MISSOULA. ON DECEMBER 31, 2019, MISSOULA CELEBRATED ITS 26TH CONSECUTIVE FIRST NIGHT, WITH NEARLY 6,000 IN ATTENDANCE. OVER 80 ARTS EVENTS AND ACTIVITIES TAKE PLACE IN OVER 35 VENUES THROUGHOUT DOWNTOWN, ON THE UNIVERSITY CAMPUS, AND AT SOUTHGATE MALL. COVID-19 HAS CAUSED THE CANCELLATION OF ALL LARGE GROUP GATHERINGS FOR THIS COMING DECEMBER AND WE ARE PLANNING A VIRTUAL EVENT FOCUSED ON "FIRST NIGHT SPOTLIGHT", THE HIGH SCHOOL SINGING COMPETITION.ARTS MISSOULA HOSTS AN ANNUAL CULTURAL AWARDS LUNCH EACH SPRING FOR OVER 200 COMMUNITY MEMBERS. THIS EVENT CELEBRATES THE WORK OF SELECTED INDIVIDUALS WHO HAVE MADE SIGNIFICANT CONTRIBUTIONS TO MISSOULA'S ART AND CULTURAL COMMUNITY IN THEIR LIFETIME, AND ALSO RECOGNIZES BUSINESSES THAT HAVE MADE SUBSTANTIAL CONTRIBUTIONS TO THE ARTS. DUE TO COVID-19 OUR LUNCH IN APRIL 2020 WAS CANCELED. WE DEVELOPED SHORT VIDEOS OF EACH AWARD WINNER WHICH ARE POSTED AT WWW.ARTSMISSOULA.ORG.ARTS MISSOULA STAR PROGRAM RECOGNIZES A NEW UNSUNG HERO IN OUR ARTS COMMUNITY EACH MONTH. THE STAR CAN BE AN ARTIST OR MUSICIAN, A BUSINESS LEADER WHO CONTRIBUTES TO THE ARTS, A SCHOOLTEACHER, OR A VOLUNTEER. PRESENTATIONS ARE MADE AT A DIFFERENT VENUE AND REPRESENT A DIFFERENT ORGANIZATION. THE PRESENTATIONS HAVE BEEN OCCURRING IN VIDEO FORMAT AS PART OF THE VIRTUAL FIRST FRIDAY GALLERY OPENING, PRESENTED BY ARTS MISSOULA AND MISSOULA COMMUNITY ACCESS TELEVISION.ARTS MISSOULA HAS COORDINATED THE GATHERING OF NATIONAL STATISTICS THAT POINT TO THE ECONOMIC IMPORTANCE OF A STRONG ARTS SECTOR IN OUR COMMUNITY. ARTS AND ECONOMIC PROSPERITY 5, A REPORT ON THE ECONOMIC IMPACT OF NONPROFIT ARTS ORGANIZATIONS AND THEIR AUDIENCES LED BY AMERICANS FOR THE ARTS, IS A FIVE-YEAR STUDY THAT LAST CAME OUT IN 2017. MISSOULA WAS ONE OF 380 STUDY GROUPS NATIONALLY. THE FINDINGS FOR THE CITY OF MISSOULA ARE IMPRESSIVE, AS OUR NONPROFIT ARTS SECTOR IS A $54 MILLION INDUSTRY, ROUGHLY THREE TIMES THAT OF THE NATIONAL AVERAGE FOR CITIES OUR SIZE. IN ANOTHER STUDY, MISSOULA WAS ALSO RANKED #4 NATIONALLY FOR MID-SIZED CITIES IN THE 2019 ARTS VIBRANCY INDEX, PRODUCED BY NATIONAL COUNCIL FOR ARTS RESEARCH AND DATA ARTS BASED ON SOURTHERN METHODIST UNIVERSITY. IN THE 2020 CREATIVE VITALITY LIST: 30 MOST CREATIVE SMALL CITIES, PUBLISHED BY THE WESTERN ARTS FEDERATION (WESTAF), MISSOULA WAS RANKED 10TH IN THE NATION. ALL THREE NATIONAL STUDIES ARE AVAILABLE AT WWW.ARTSMISSOULA.ORG.ARTS MISSOULA HAS OFFERED ITSELF AS AN UMBRELLA ORGANIZATION FOR GROUPS SEEKING A NONPROFIT FISCAL SPONSORSHIP. MONTANA BOOK FESTIVAL LAKEBOTTOM SOUND JAZZ CONCERTS, WORKSHOPS AND JAM SESSIONS ALL-CITY JAZZ PROGRAM FOR HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS MONTANA AREA MUSIC ASSOCIATION (MAMA)ARTS MISSOULA HAS BEEN THE ADMINISTRATION ARM OF THE CITY OF MISSOULA PUBLIC ART COMMITTEE SINCE FEBRUARY 2016. THE PARTNERSHIP HAS INCREASED THE CITY'S COMMITMENT TO ARTS MISSOULA WITH ADDITIONAL FUNDING AND NOW THE ORGANIZATION HAS A LONG-TERM CONTRACT WITH THE CITY. ARTS MISSOULA COORDINATES THE COMMUNITY-WIDE EVENT PLANNING CALENDAR WITH MISSOULAEVENTS.NET AS AN EFFORT TO HELP ORGANIZATIONS WITH LONG-TERM PLANNING FOR ANNUAL AND SPECIAL EVENTS.WE PRODUCE A WEEKLY E-MAIL NEWSLETTER TO NEARLY 1200 SUBSCRIBERS. THIS COVERS NEWS AND EVENTS IN MISSOULA, IN THE NORTHERN ROCKY MOUNTAIN REGION, AND COVERS NEWS STORIES AND TRENDS NATIONALLY AND INTERNATIONALLY. THE WEBSITE CONTAINS A LISTING OF THE ARTISTS, ORGANIZATIONS, EVENTS, VENUE SITES, GALLERIES AND MUSEUMS IN MISSOULA.
