The Montana Innocence Project works to exonerate the innocent and prevent future wrongful convictions through a combination of free legal assistance, community and clinical education programs, and policy work.
THE MONTANA INNOCENCE PROJECT PROVIDES FREE LEGAL ASSISTANCE TO WRONGFULLY CONVICTED MONTANANS USING DNA AND OTHER EVIDENCE, CLINICAL TRAINING PROGRAMS FOR LAW, JOURNALISM, AND SOCIAL WORK STUDENTS, COMMUNITY OUTREACH AND EDUCATION ABOUT THE CAUSES OF WRONGFUL CONVICTION, AND TRAININGS TO CRIMINAL LAW STAKEHOLDERS TO IMPROVE THE ADMINISTRATION OF JUSTICE.In 2020 MTIP processed intake on 43 new applications for legal assistance; provided active investigation on 26 files; and advanced litigation on six open cases. Despite pandemic restrictions, MTIP provided training and oversight for eight clinical students, hosted five virtual education panels/seminars, and led efforts on a study bill examining exoneree compensation programs in Montana's 2020 Interim Session - resulting in a bipartisan, committee sponsored 2021 Session bill.Moreover, MTIP assisted client, Katie Garding, in securing pre-release transfer from Montana Women's Prison.
