TO PROTECT THE SCENIC AND NATURAL RESOURCES OF THE CHOCORUA LAKE BASIN AND SURROUNDING AREA THROUGH CONSERVATION PRACTICES, LAND PROTECTION, EASEMENTS, MAINTENANCE OF LANDS FOR PUBLIC ACCESS, AND DEVELOPMENT OF A COMMUNITY OF SUPPORT.

LAKE AND PROPERTY MANAGEMENT - STEWARDSHIP DIRECTOR, INTERN AND MANY VOLUNTEERS MANAGED AND MAINTAINED NEARLY 1000 ACRES OF FEE-OWNED LANDS WITHIN THE CHOCORUA LAKE BASIN. 2020 SAW A LARGE INCREASE IN VISITOR TRAFFIC DUE TO COVID. MANY OF OUR PROJECTS FOCUSED ON MITIGATING THE WEAR ON LAKE ACCESS AREAS BY SPREADING WOODCHIPS, PLANTING SHRUBS AT CRITICAL LOCATIONS AND REDUCING PEDESTRIAN AND VEHICULAR TRAFFIC ISSUES WITH IMPROVED SIGNAGE. IN ADDITION, WE WORKED TO CONTROL INVASIVE BITTERSWEET WITH THE AID OF AN NRCS GRANT ON ONE PROPERTY AND TACKLED OTHER INVASIVE SPECIES ON PROPERTIES WITH MANAGED FIELD HABITATS. CONTINUED WATER QUALITY MONITORING PROGRAM TO ENSURE THE CONSISTENT HEALTH OF THE LAKE. BERMS AND SWALES ON THE EAST SHORE WERE MAINTAINED TO ENSURE THAT TORM WATER RUN-OFF FROM RT 16 CONTINUES TO BE PROPERLY FILTERED. AS DAM OWNERS ON THE LAKE, WE MONITORED LAKE LEVELS AND CONDUCTED MAINTENANCE ACTIVITIES AROUND THE STRUCTURE. THE BASIN VIEW PROJECT TO PROVIDE AN ATTRACTIVE PLACE TO VIEW, PHOTOGRAPH, PAINT THE ICONIC VIEW OF MT CHOCORUA AND THE LAKE CONTINUED WITH CONSTRUTION OF A BEAUTIFUL STONE WALL PERIMETER, FINISH SUBSTRATE MATERIALS AND GRADING, FORESTRY AND FURTHER PROGRESS ON THE FINISHING TOUCHES. WE LOOK FORWARD TO A GRAND OPENING NEXT SUMMER.

LAND CONSERVATION - STEWARDSHIP AND MONITORING OF OUR 76 EASEMENTS AND 16 FEE-OWNED PROPERTIES. DESPITE COVID LIMITATIONS, WE WERE ABLE TO COMPLETE MONITORING ON ALL OUR PROPERTIES WITH SOME SOCIALLY DISTANCED MEETINGS, PHONE CALLS, REVIEW OF TOWN AND COUNTY RECORDS, AND PROPERTY WALKS. FINALIZED A RESPONSE TO A CONTINUED VIOLATION FROM 2019 AND RESPONDED TO A NEW VIOLATION RELATED TO DENSITY RESTRICTIONS. IN THE PROCESS WE HAVE STRENGTHENED OUR VIOLATION POLICIES AND CONTINUE TO WORK ON LANDOWNER COMMUNICATIONS TO IMPROVE UNDERSTANDING OF CONSERVATION EASEMENTS. CONTINUED DISCUSSIONS WITH THREE FAMILY TRUSTS ON A CONSERVATION EASEMENT COVERING 85 ACRES OF WOODED UPLAND AND WETLANDS ALONG THE CHOCORUA RIVER. THE PROJECT ALSO INCLUDES ANOTHER 47 ACRES OF FOREST TO BE GIFTED TO THE CLC. THE EASEMENT INCLUDES A TRAIL ROW PROVIDING ACCESS TO OTHER CLC PROPERTY, WHICH WILL BE OPEN TO THE PUBLIC FOR NON-MOTORIZED USE. THE COMPLETED PROJECT WILL PROVIDE CONNECTIVITY WITH OTHER PROTECTED FORESTED AND WETLAND HABITATS ON MULTIPLE PARCELS.

EDUCATION & OUTREACH - EARLY IN THE YEAR, WE COLLABORATED WITH A LARGE GROUP OF ENVIRONMENTAL & OUTDOOR ORGANIZATIONS IN THE AREA ON A SERIES OF COMMUNITY FORUMS AND OFFERED AN IN-PERSON WINTER ECOLOGY TALK AND AN INTERACTIVE WINTER ECOLOGY WORKSHOP. AS COVID ARRIVED, IN COLLABORATION WITH THE COOK LIBRARY, WE MOVED OUR IN-PERSON EVENING NATURE PRESENTATIONS TO ZOOM. THESE INCLUDED GUEST PRESENTERS FROM VARIOUS AREAS OF EXPERTISE. WE HOSTED STEWARDSHIP DAYS WITH LIMITED NUMBERS OF PARTICIPANTS, MASKS, AND SOCIAL DISTANCING. THE SAME PROTOCOLS WERE IN PLACE FOR OUTDOOR NATURE EXPLORATIONS. WE PRODUCED TWO PRINT NEWSLETTERS SHARING THE INFORMATION ABOUT OUR WORK AND STEWARDSHIP OF THE CHOCORUA LAKE AREA; MONTHLY E-NEWSLETTERS SHARING ORGANIZATIONAL NEWS, NATURE NEW FROM THE AREA, AND IDEAS ABOUT HOW TO CONNECT WITH NATURE AS A SOLACE IN CHALLENGING TIMES; AND NATURE NOTES TO SHARE VIA OUR WEBSITE AND SOCIAL MEDIA. WE ALSO CREATED A SERIES OF SHORT EDUCATIONAL VIDEOS INTRODUCING PEOPLE TO THE FLORA AND FAUNA OF OUR CONSERVED LANDS, AND A DOCUMENTARY ABOUT OUR AWARD-WINNING BERMS & SWALES BMP PROJECT.
