Building Tradition Through Music, Dance and Drama.
The Christmas Revels, since 1975 an annual family-friendly celebration of the winter solstice, presents songs, dances, stories, and celebrations from different cultural traditions around the world. Performances have featured traditions from England, Ireland, Scotland, Wales, Appalachia, France, Italy, Scandinavia, Russia, Eastern Europe, and the Balkans. Community children, teens, and adults perform on-stage alongside nationally known guest artists representing that year's traditions. In 2019, approximately 3,100 people of all ages attended the five performances at Lebanon Opera House in Lebanon, NH, with audience participation in the singing and dancing one of the trademarks of the event. The production was made possible by 25 paid professionals, 75 behind-the-scenes volunteers, and 49 local performers on stage, one-third of whom were children and teens under the age of 20.
The free Summer Revels festivals in Norwich and South Pomfret, Vermont celebrate the arrival of summer with traditional songs, Morris dances, picnics, games, healthy food, a bonfire, and a family-friendly performance. The Summer Revels chorus is entirely non-auditioned, with a chance for families to perform together. There were 25 volunteers and 31 participants of all ages in this program, and the performances were seen by an estimated 350 people combined, singing along with the chorus. Spring Singers, like Summer Revels, is a non-auditioned, multigenerational chorus consisting of 50 members of all ages this year, giving families a chance to share an activity together. Two scheduled free performances were canceled due to COVID-19.
Revels Traditions is a suite of year-round programs emphasizing community participation. Revels Band of Fools is an all-ages musical ensemble modeled on the community street band, with no music reading experience necessary, using whatever instruments players choose to bring with opportunities to play for our community dances. Revels Community dances are a free intergenerational evening of joyful dancing, drawing community members of all ages with easy instruction for newcomers. Both programs were held at the LISTEN Community Dinner Hall in White River Junction, to make them more easily available to low-income families. Quarterly Revels Pub Sings are free, family-friendly events held at a local restaurant, an opportunity to share food, drink, song, and camaraderie.
