Organizations Filed Purposes:
TO RESEARCH THE HISTORY OF LYME AND SHARE IT WITH RESIDENTS AND OTHERS. TO PRESERVE DOCUMENTS, RECORDS, PHOTOGRAPHS, MAPS AND OTHER RELEVANT ARTIFACTS. TO CULTIVATE AN APPRECIATION OF THE TOWN'S HISTORY AND HOW IT INFORMS THE PRESENT.
THE LYME HISTORIANS, INC. WAS FOUNDED IN 1961 WITH THE PURPOSE OF HELPING DOCUMENT THE TOWN'S HISTORY, KEEPING IT ALIVE AND RELEVANT TO THE PRESENT DAY BY MAINTAINING EXHIBITS AND COLLECTIONS AND ACQUIRING BOOKS, MAPS, DOCUMENTS AND ARTIFACTS PERTAINING TO LYME NEW HAMPSHIRE.
THE LYME HISTORIANS, INCLUDING THE MUSEUM, MOVED INTO THE CHURCHILL-MELVILL HOUSE ON 15 MAIN STREET IN LYME, IN THE FALL OF 2016. THE NEW MUSEUM INCLUDES 3 ROOMS OF REVOLVING EXHIBITS, 1 ROOM WITH STATIONARY EXHIBITS AND ATTACHED BARN WITH EXHIBITS. NEW ITEMS WERE DONATED TO ADD TO THE EXHIBIT ROOMS INCLUDING AN ESTEY ORGAN THAT BELONGED TO A LYME RESIDENT. A NEW ENTRANCE WAS ADDED ON THE EAST SIDE OF THE BUILDING WITH A VIEW TOWARDS 4 HISTORIC SITES IN TOWN: THE LYME CONGREGATIONAL CHURCH, THE HORSESHEDS, THE OLD JAILHOUSE AND THE OLD LYME PLAIN CEMETERY. 2017 WAS THE FIRST FULL YEAR OF OPERATION IN THE CHURCHILL-MELVIN HOUSE. THE MUSEUM HAS WEEKLY HOURS WHEN OPEN TO THE PUBLIC YEAR-ROUND AND BY APPOINTMENT. PUBLICITY IS DONE BY LOCAL PAPER AND ON THE UPPER VALLEY AND TOWN LISTSERVE AND SIGNS.
IN 2017, LYME HISTORIANS RECEIVED THE TITLE TO A BEAUTIFULLY KEPT ONE-ROOM SCHOOLHOUSE IN LYME CENTER, A GENEROUS DONATION FROM A RESIDENT AND LYME HISTORIAN MEMBER. THE SCHOOLHOUSE HAS MANY, IF NOT ALL, OF ITS ORIGINAL FEATURES INCLUDING OLD SCHOOL DESKS. IN 2018, THERE WAS A GRAND OPENING WITH TWO LYME RESIDENTS THAT ATTENDED THE SCHOOL. THERE WERE SEVERAL DONATIONS OF BOOKS, PHOTOS AND OTHER ITEMS RELATED TO THE SCHOOLHOUSE. THE SCHOOLHOUSE IS OPEN TO THE PUBLIC DURING THE LATE SPRING TO EARLY FALL.
THE LYME HISTORIANS SPONSOR EVENTS THROUGHOUT THE YEAR, INCLUDING AN ANNUAL MEETING WITH A GUEST SPEAKER, HISTORIC TOURS SUCH AS THE CELLAR HOLE PROJECT AND LYME PLAIN CEMETERY WITH ACTORS AS PROMINENT LYME HISTORIC FIGURES. THE CELLAR HOLE PROJECT MAPS THE AREA OF THE CELLAR HOLE AND RESEARCHES OWNERSHIP IN THE TOWN OF LYME. THE LYME HISTORIANS ARCHIVE HISTORIC DOCUMENTS INCLUDING OLD JOURNALS, DEEDS, PHOTOGRAPHS, MAPS, VITAL RECORDS FROM LOCAL ORGANIZATIONS AND CHURCHES, AND AN EVER-EXPANDING COLLECTION OF GENEALOGY RECORDS.
