Organizations Filed Purposes:
THE DERRYFIELD SCHOOL INSPIRES BRIGHT, MOTIVATED YOUNG PEOPLE TO BE THEIR BEST AND PROVIDES THEM WITH THE SKILLS AND EXPERIENCES NEEDED TO BE VALUED, DYNAMIC, CONFIDENT, AND PURPOSEFUL MEMBERS OF ANY COMMUNITY.
FISCAL YEAR 2020 WAS A YEAR OF UNPRECEDENTED CHANGE FOR THE DERRYFIELD SCHOOL. IN ADDITION TO OPENING NEW FACILITIES, WE ROLLED OUT A NEW ACADEMIC PROGRAM VISION AND SUCCESSFULLY TRANSITIONED TO SYNCHRONOUS VIRTUAL LEARNING IN MARCH. WE HAD A ROBUST ENROLLMENT OF ALMOST 400 STUDENTS, AND CONTINUE TO DRAW FROM OVER 58 TOWNS AND CITIES IN NEW HAMPSHIRE AND MASSACHUSETTS.EVEN WITH ALL OF THIS CHANGE, THE SCHOOL HAS STAYED TRUE TO ITS MISSION, AND STRIVES TO BE A REGIONAL AND STATE LEADER IN EDUCATIONAL EXCELLENCE AND INNOVATION. OUR STRATEGIC PLAN KEEPS US FOCUSED ON BEING EDUCATIONAL LEADERS, KEEPING OUR PEDAGOGY AND FACILITIES CURRENT AND INNOVATIVE, AND STAYING CONNECTED TO THE LOCAL AND GLOBAL COMMUNITY. AS A COLLEGE PREPARATORY SCHOOL, WE EXCEL AT DEVELOPING SKILLS AND LIFELONG HABITS THAT SET OUR ALUMNI UP FOR SUCCESS IN COLLEGE AND BEYOND. FOR THE SCHOOL YEAR ENDING JUNE 2020, 100% OF THE CLASS WAS ADMITTED TO FOUR YEAR COLLEGES AND UNIVERSITIES, 94% TO ONE OF THEIR TOP THREE CHOICES. THE CLASS WAS OFFERED OVER $2.9 MILLION PER YEAR IN NON-NEED BASED MERIT AID FROM THESE COLLEGES AND UNIVERSITIES, AVERAGING OVER $41,000 A YEAR PER SENIOR. SUCCESSFUL COMPLETION OF OUR LAST STRATEGIC PLAN BROUGHT MAJOR ACADEMIC AND FACILITY CHANGES DURING FY2020. IN LATE NOVEMBER, OF 2019, WE OPENED A NEW SCIENCE & INNOVATION CENTER AND ATHLETIC & WELLNESS FACILITY; AND IN SPRING OF 2020 WE COMPLETED CONSTRUCTION OF A NEW TENNIS COMPLEX. THESE FACILITIES WERE BUILT TO BETTER SERVE DERRYFIELD'S INNOVATIVE AND DYNAMIC ACADEMIC VISION, AND TO INCREASE WAYS FOR US TO CONNECT WITH AND SERVE THE GREATER COMMUNITY. DEVELOPED IN CONJUNCTION WITH THE NEW FACILITIES IS AN ACADEMIC PROGRAM VISION THAT WAS ROLLED OUT DURING THIS SAME FISCAL YEAR. A MAJOR CHANGE IN OUR ACADEMIC PROGRAM WAS OUR SHIFT FROM AP (ADVANCED PLACEMENT) TO AT (ADVANCED TOPICS) COURSES. AP CLASSES, WHICH ARE DESIGNED TO HAVE FACULTY "TEACH TO THE TEST", WERE NOT MEETING THE NEEDS OF OUR STUDENTS OR FACULTY. NEW AT CLASSES, OUR HIGHEST LEVEL AND MOST ACADEMICALLY RIGOROUS COURSES, ARE DESIGNED BY OUR FACULTY AND INCLUDE INCREASED RESEARCH, PROJECT BASED LEARNING, AND REAL WORLD PROBLEM SOLVING. WE ALSO ADDED REQUIRED COMPUTER SCIENCE CLASSES FOR SEVENTH AND TENTH GRADERS, AND AN EXPLORATION PROGRAM, WHICH ALLOWS STUDENTS TO PURSUE LEARNING IN TOPICS SUCH AS BEEKEEPING, FINANCIAL LITERACY, SPORTS JOURNALISM, PICKLEBALL, AND MORE.ANOTHER SIGNIFICANT PROGRAM DEVELOPMENT DURING FY2020 IS OUR INCREASED COMMITMENT TO EQUITY AND INCLUSION. DERRYFIELD HAS A LONG TRADITION OF EDUCATION AND PROGRAMMING AROUND EQUITY, AND A SIGNIFICANT FINANCIAL AID PROGRAM FOR SOCIOECONOMIC DIVERSITY. DURING FY2020 WE ROLLED OUT OUR EQUITABLE TUITION PROGRAM, WHICH PROVIDES EACH FAMILY WITH A TUITION THAT IS BASED ON THEIR UNIQUE FINANCIAL SITUATION, AND RANGES FROM $1,000 TO OUR FULL TUITION AMOUNT. THIS ALLOWS FOR GREATER ACCESS FOR STUDENTS FROM A WIDER RANGE OF SOCIOECONOMIC LEVELS. ONE THIRD OF OUR STUDENTS RECEIVED NEED-BASED EQUITABLE TUITION, AND 21% OF OUR STUDENTS SELF-IDENTIFIED AS STUDENTS OF COLOR. OUR STUDENTS HAVE STARTED SEVERAL EQUITY AND DIVERSITY RELATED CLUBS, AND HELD THEIR FOURTH ANNUAL GENDER EQUITY CONFERENCE, OPEN TO DERRYFIELD AND NON-DERRYFIELD STUDENTS. OUR STUDENTS ALSO PRESENTED AT BERWICK ACADEMY'S DIVERSITY CONFERENCE, AND PARTICIPATED IN ANTI BIAS TRAINING AT DERRYFIELD'S SUMMER LEADERSHIP PROGRAM. FACULTY AND STAFF MEMBERS HAD SEVERAL OPPORTUNITIES TO PARTICIPATE IN EQUITY AND BELONGING TRAINING, INCLUDING SPEAKERS WHO CAME TO DERRYFIELD AND FACULTY WHO WERE SENT TO THE AISNE DIVERSITY CONFERENCE.AN UNANTICIPATED, BUT SUCCESSFUL PROGRAM CHANGE DURING FY2020 WAS OUR TRANSITION TO VIRTUAL LEARNING IN MARCH 2020, DUE TO COVID-19. IN A SPAN OF TWO WEEKS, OUR FACULTY AND STAFF PREPARED AN ACADEMIC PROGRAM THAT PROVIDED SYNCHRONOUS, ONLINE LEARNING FOR ALL OF OUR STUDENTS. STUDENTS HAD A DEFINED SCHEDULE EACH DAY, WHICH INCLUDED LIVE TIME WITH THEIR TEACHERS AND PEERS. WE ALSO CONTINUED WITH ADVISORY MEETINGS, ALL-SCHOOL COMMUNITY MEETINGS, AND LIVE AND RECORDED ATHLETIC AND FITNESS OPPORTUNITIES FOR ADULTS AND STUDENTS. STUDENT AND PARENT SURVEYS WERE CONDUCTED REGULARLY, AND THAT FEEDBACK HELPED US REVISE THE PROGRAM OVER THE COURSE OF THE SPRING. IN APRIL, 94% OF OUR PARENTS INDICATED THAT THEY WERE EITHER HIGHLY SATISFIED OR SATISFIED WITH OUR VIRTUAL LEARNING; AND AT THE END OF THE SCHOOL YEAR 97% OF PARENTS SAID THEY WOULD RECOMMEND DERRYFIELD TO FRIENDS AND FAMILY. WE ARE PROUD OF OUR FACULTY, STAFF, AND STUDENTS, WHO ALL HAD A PART IN MAKING FY2020 SO SUCCESSFUL FOR DERRYFIELD, EVEN IN THE MIDST OF A PANDEMIC. WE CONTINUE TO LOOK FOR WAYS TO DEVELOP INCREASED CONNECTIONS WITH THE GREATER MANCHESTER COMMUNITY, AND TO PROVIDE THE MOST INNOVATIVE AND EFFECTIVE COLLEGE PREPARATORY EDUCATION TO AS MANY STUDENTS AS POSSIBLE.
