Organizations Filed Purposes: THE MISSION OF NSCDA-NH IS TO PRESERVE AND INTERPRET HISTORIC PROPERTIES AND ARTIFACTS, INCREASE PUBLIC AWARENESS AND APPRECIATION OF AMERICAN HISTORY AND PROMOTE PATRIOTISM AND LOVE OF COUNTRY. THE SOCIETY PROVIDES EDUCATIONAL OPPORTUNITIES THROUGH GUIDED TOURS, INFORMATIVE PROGRAMS, EXHIBITIONS, PUBLICATIONS, AND OUTREACH TO SCHOOLS. THE PURPOSE OF THE MOFFATT-LADD HOUSE AND GARDEN IS TO INTERPRET AMERICAN, NEW HAMPSHIRE, AND PORTSMOUTH HISTORY THROUGH THE LIVES OF THE INHABITANTS OF THE HOUSE, BOTH FREE AND ENSLAVED. THE SOCIETY COLLECTS AND PRESERVES OBJECTS AND MANUSCRIPTS APPROPRIATE TO THIS HISTORY.

NSCDA-NH'S MOST SIGNIFICANT ACTIVITY IS TO PRESERVE AND INTERPRET ITS HISTORIC HOUSE MUSEUM, THE MOFFATT-LADD HOUSE AND GARDEN, THROUGH GUIDED TOURS, PUBLIC PROGRAMS, EXHIBITIONS, PUBLICATIONS, AND OUTREACH TO SCHOOLS. THE MUSEUM'S PURPOSE IS TO INTERPRET AMERICAN, NH, AND LOCAL HISTORY THROUGH THE LIVES AND POSSESSIONS OF THE INHABITANTS OF THE HOUSE. SEE PT III & SCH O.

NSCDA-NH OWNS, OPERATES, INTERPRETS, AND MAINTAINS, ACCORDING TO THE STRICTEST STANDARDS OF HISTORIC PRESERVATION, THE MOFFATT-LADD HOUSE AND GARDEN AT 154 MARKET STREET IN PORTSMOUTH, NH, AS AN HISTORIC HOUSE MUSEUM COMPLEX. STAFF SUPERVISE THE MAINTENANCE, INTERPRETATION, AND DISPLAY OF THE MUSEUM'S BUILDINGS AND COLLECTIONS. STAFF MEMBERS RESEARCH THE COLLECTIONS AND THE HISTORY OF THE HOUSE AND ITS INHABITANTS AS THE BASIS FOR PRESENTING PUBLIC PROGRAMS, PREPARING MATERIALS FOR PUBLICATION, AND UPDATING TOUR CONTENT, SCHOOL AND YOUTH PROGRAMS, AND ONLINE RESOURCES. A NATIONAL HISTORIC LANDMARK, THE HOUSE IS OPEN TO THE PUBLIC FOR TOURS SEVEN DAYS A WEEK FROM THE BEGINNING OF JUNE THROUGH THE THIRD WEEKEND IN OCTOBER. THE MUSEUM IS A MEMBER OF THE PORTSMOUTH HISTORIC SITES ASSOCIATES, AND IS A STOP ON THE PORTSMOUTH BLACK HERITAGE TRAIL. THE MUSEUM PARTNERS WITH OTHER NON-PROFIT ORGANIZATIONS SUCH AS PRO-PORTSMOUTH, THE NEW HAMPSHIRE FILM FESTIVAL, THE PISCATAQUA MARITIME COMMISSION, AND THE GIRL SCOUTS OF THE GREEN AND WHITE MOUNTAINS. THE MUSEUM ALSO PARTICIPATES IN THE BLUE STAR MUSEUM PROGRAM FOR ACTIVE-DUTY MILITARY AND THEIR FAMILIES. IN 2019, 6,370 PEOPLE VISITED THE SITE, FOR TOURS AND PROGRAMS. ATTENDANCE ON CHILDREN'S DAY WAS DOWN OVER 2018 BECAUSE OF INCLEMENT WEATHER. IN 2019 WE WERE A VENUE FOR ONLY TWO DAYS OF THE NH FILM FESTIVAL, SO OUR NUMBERS WERE DOWN SLIGHTLY FOR THAT EVENT AS WELL. HARVESTING HISTORY ATTRACTED ABOUT 350 VISITORS, AND IS A ONE-DAY EVENT, AS OPPOSED TO WREATHS AND TREES WHICH IS A THREE-DAY EVENT HELD ONLY IN EVEN YEARS (TO AVOID DIRECT COMPETITION WITH A SIMILAR EVENT HELD BY ANOTHER ORGANIZATION IN ODD YEARS). WE ALSO HAD FEWER WEDDINGS AND WEDDING RECEPTIONS AT THE HOUSE THAN IN 2018. NONETHELESS OUR REVENUE FROM TOURS WAS UP OVER 2018, LARGELY DUE TO GROUP TOURS. WE HELD A TWO-DAY WORKSHOP FOR SCHOOL AND MUSEUM EDUCATIONS IN AUGUST AS PART OF OUR "EXPLORING THE ISSUE OF SLAVERY IN THE ERA OF THE AMERICAN REVOLUTION," EDUCATIONAL PROGRAM. FOR THE FIRST TIME, THE PROGRAM WAS MADE POSSIBLE WITH FUNDS GIVEN TO THE SOCIETY TO ESTABLISH THE VIVIAN TREAT EDUCATIONAL FUND. THE YEAR'S MOST IMPORTANT MUSEUM-RELATED MAINTENANCE ACTIVITIES WERE THE REPAIR AND RESTORATION OF THE BANISTER AND RAILINGS OF THE FRONT ENTRANCE AND THE LOUVERED DOOR COVERING THE FRONT DOOR, AND BATHROOM AND OFFICE STORAGE AND LIGHTING UPGRADES. WE ALSO REMOVED THE PLUMBING FROM THE SECOND FLOOR OF THE HOUSE, A CHANGE THAT WAS SUGGESTED BY PRESERVATION PROFESSIONALS AS A WISE MEASURE TO ENSURE THE SAFETY OF THE HOUSE AND COLLECTIONS. THE BIGGEST OVERALL PROJECT WAS THE PARLOR RESTORATION PROJECT, WHICH INVOLVING REMOVING PAINT FROM THE FLOOR AND INSTALLING WALLPAPER, AS WELL AS FURNISHING THE ROOM WITH APPROPRIATE REPRODUCTION TEXTILES. WE USED SOME OUR COLLECTION FUNDS TO PURCHASE APPROPRIATE ANTIQUE CERAMICS AND GLASS FOR THE PARLOR RESTORATION, INCLUDING ELEVEN 18TH-CENTURY AIR-TWIST STEM GLASSES, AND SEVERAL PIECES OF EARLY WORCESTER (ENGLAND) "PENCILWARE" INCLUDING THREE CUPS AND SAUCERS AND ONE COFFEE CUP TO MATCH DESCRIPTIONS IN THE 18TH CENTURY INVENTORIES OF THE HOUSE'S FURNISHINGS. WE ALSO RECEIVED SEVERAL GIFTS FOR THE COLLECTION, INCLUDING EARLY BLUE-AND-WHITE WORCESTER WARES. THE MUSEUM HOSTED A VARIETY OF PUBLIC LECTURES, TOURS, DEMONSTRATIONS, AND PERFORMANCES, AS WELL AS SCHOOL TOURS FOR STUDENTS IN 3RD GRADE THROUGH HIGH SCHOOL. WE DID NOT HAVE A MAJOR FUNDRAISING EVENT IN 2019, BUT INSTEAD HAD A CELEBRATION FOR NSCDA-NH'S 125TH ANNIVERSARY.
