Childrens Choice Child Care Services, Inc., is dedicated to facilitating the positive development of children by developing and maintaining programs that are a model of quality programs where children play, learn, grow, and make friends programs where children are nurtured and develop life skills. Beginning March 16, 2020, school were closed due to the COVID-19 pandemic. As a child care provider, Childrens Choice was deemed an essential business and allowed to continue to operate. However, our operations were dramatically impacted.Starting March 16, 2020 (when schools and most businesses were ordered to close), Childrens Choice began providing emergency care for essential workers. We condensed our 13 school-age locations (located in APS elementary schools) down to 6 locations and began providing full-day care from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Beginning in April, we closed our preschool location permanently. Staff to child ratios had to be decreased and the amount of children we were allowed to serve decreased due to space limit. Most of the Childrens Choice families who had previously enrolled their children kept their children home due to the increased cost of a full-day program, stay-at-home orders, working remotely or job loss.Overall, our enrollment decreased about 90% from pre-pa
Before and After School Program and Summer Program Childrens Choice collaborates with schools and communities to bring quality programs that nurture children by using programs which develop childrens life skills. A priority area of focus for improvement over the past several years has been our academic and enrichment programming. Our goal is to improve the quantity and quality of our enrichment offerings and to align appropriate curriculum with academic standards in a clear and observable way. In addition to the informal staff-directed clubs, we have increased contracting with/hiring professional enrichment class teachers to offer the highest quality enrichment classes that feature novelty, challenge, communication skills, and playful learning. We have created five umbrellas under which all classes must fall: Literacy, Arts, Cognitive & Life Skills, Healthy Living, and STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math). In 2019-2020 we offered 119 enrichment classes plus four streaming workshops. Over 2,700 students across 13 schools (of which 6 are Title 1 designates) attended classes all at no cost to students or families. Prior to March 16, 2020 Childrens Choices 13 sites had over 1,300 children enrolled in the core program for 2019-2020 academic year. All 13 school-age sites are accredited through the Council On Accreditation, designating them as 5-Star Programs in the NM CYFD Tiered Quality Rating System.
Preschool ProgramLike all of the CC school-age programs, the preschool is inspired by the theories of Lev Vygotsky, John Dewey, and the Reggio Emilia approach. The preschool program achieved a 5-Star CYFD certification (the highest possible quality rating), making Childrens Choice programs 100% 5-Star. Prior to March 16, 2020, the program served 20 children. It was permanently closed at the end of March 2020 due to the pandemic.
Community Providers Training ProgramChildrens Choice uses their established programs as a source of training and technical assistance for the larger community of school-age care practitioners. In addition to our current social media resources for sharing information and storytelling, Childrens Choice has a Pinterest page where we post leadership topics, teambuilding games, and activity ideas in science, technology, engineering, math, music, art, food, field trips, and summer planning themes. During the 2019-2020 school year Childrens Choice presented sessions in South Carolina, Texas and Florida before all travel shut down due to the pandemic.
