COTTONWOOD GULCH EXPEDITIONS SPONSORS EDUCATIONAL WILDERNESS EXPEDITIONS AND OUTDOOR PROGRAMS IN THE AMERICAN SOUTHWEST THAT PROMOTE PERSONAL GROWTH, SCIENTIFIC, HISTORIC AND CULTURAL DISCOVERY AS WELL AS TO EDUCATE AND PROMOTE AN ENVIRONMENTAL ETHIC AMONG PROGRAM PARTICIPANTS.
In response to the global pandemic, CGE cancelled its summer Treks for the first time in almost 80 years. Curriculum and programs were modified to safely serve youth in virtual and in-person programs. The Classrooms Get Outdoors program served 776 participants with inquiry-based science field trips. The Students In Wilderness Initiative (SIWI) served 300 eighth-graders through an interdisciplinary classroom learning and field expedition program. Under a federally-funded initiative to give fourth-graders access to federal public lands, CGE's Every Kid Outdoors program served 250 students. A youth conservation crew of 6 people did restoration work on public lands for 5 weeks. New partnerships enabled CGE to use Base Camp as a hub to provide food and firewood to nearby Navajo communities during COVID. Investments in the Base Camp included completing a new multi-use building, adding solar panels to generate electricity, improving the farm, and building bunk beds out of wood from the property. Educational lectures for adults turned into live-stream events, attracting between 200-1,000 attendees for each event.
