The Hermit's Peak Watershed Alliance (HPWA) works to protect and restore the ecological and cultural heritage of the Hermit's Peak region through restoration, environmental education and community action.
HPWA is leading a comprehensive effort to revitalize the Gallinas River Park. In 2019, we finished river restoration of one-third mile of the Gallinas River in downtown Las Vegas, planned installation of 5 interpretive signs, completed installation of 2 interpretive signs, planned park entrance landscaping and installed a wayfinding sign. We held the third annual Gallinas Riverfest with fun and educational activities.
Planned repairs to trails and man-made log dams in Beaver Creek of the Santa Fe National Forest; began work on a NEPA for trail and man-made log dams repairs along Gallinas Creek; began design work for an instream restoration project; and began developing a story map and driving guide about the Gallinas Watershed.
Continued work to remediate nutrient water quality impairments in the lower Mora River with improvements to livestock and farming management, instream restoration, and erosion control. Planned remediation necessary to improve stream flows in Wolf Creek with numerous studies and continued instream restoration in Wolf Creek.
