ECOLOGICAL FORESTRY: THE FOREST STEWARDS GUILD ACTIVELY PRACTICES AND PROMOTES ECOLOGICAL FORESTRY, AN APPROACH TO RESPONSIBLE RESOURCE MANAGEMENT THAT SUSTAINS THE ENTIRE FOREST ECOSYSTEM AND FOREST-DEPENDENT HUMAN COMMUNITIES. FROM MAINE TO NEW MEXICO AND NORTH CAROLINA TO OREGON, WE WORK TO IMPROVE HOW FORESTRY IS PRACTICED THROUGH RESEARCH, EDUCATION, TRAINING, AND DEMONSTRATION. IN 2019, GUILD GATHERINGS IN FORESTS ACROSS THE COUNTRY DREW HUNDREDS OF PEOPLE TO LEARN AND EXPLORE FOREST STEWARDSHIP. GUILD GATHERINGS ARE BUILT FROM THE INSPIRATION OF MEMBERS, STAFF, AND PARTNERS TO DEMONSTRATE INNOVATIVE FORESTRY TECHNIQUES, EXPLORE MANAGEMENT POSSIBILITIES, AND FEATURE SPECIFIC SITES ACROSS THE DIVERSITY OF OUR COUNTRY'S FORESTS.
COMMUNITY FORESTRY: THE FOREST STEWARDS GUILD REVITALIZES RURAL COMMUNITIES BY IMPLEMENTING STRATEGIES THAT SUPPORT SOCIAL, ECONOMIC, AND ECOLOGICAL GOALS. WE WORKED WITH PARTNERS TO RESTORE SHORTLEAF PINE ECOSYSTEMS IN THE CUMBERLAND PLATEAU AND FACILITATED ACTION-ORIENTED DISCUSSIONS OF FOREST CLIMATE ADAPTATION IN NEW ENGLAND. IN 2019, WE CONTINUED OUR LONG-RUNNING YOUTH PROGRAM IN NEW MEXICO AND ADDED TRAINING FOR RURAL YOUTH IN THE GULF STATES. WE ALSO EXPANDED OUR PRESCRIBED FIRE PROGRAM BY LEADING AND PARTICIPATING IN COLLABORATIVE EFFORTS TO RESTORE FIRE ADAPTED ECOSYSTEMS AND KEEP COMMUNITIES SAFE. WE FURTHER STRENGHTENED THE NATIONAL NETWORK OF LEADERS WHO EMPOWER WOMEN LANDOWNERS TO MAKE INFORMED DECISIONS ABOUT THEIR LAND.
PUBLIC POLICY: THE FOREST STEWARDS GUILD IMPROVES THE EFFECTIVENESS OF FORESTRY POLICIES AND PROGRAMS THROUGH EDUCATION, APPLIED RESEARCH, AND FIELD WORK DESIGNED FOR POLICY-MAKERS, MANAGERS, AND THE GENERAL PUBLIC. A KEY POLICY NEED ACROSS MUCH OF THE WESTERN UNITED STATES IS TO INCREASE THE PACE AND SCALE OF WILDFIRE THREAT REDUCTION TREATMENTS, ESPECIALLY PRESCRIBED FIRE. THE GUILD CONTRIBUTED RESEARCH, PRACTICAL EXPERIENCE, AND COLLABORATIVE LEADERSHIP TO HELP ADDRESS THIS CHALLENGE. WE ALSO WORKED WITH PARTNERS ACROSS THE COUNTRY TO TACKLE OTHER THREATS TO FORESTS INCLUDING CLIMATE CHANGE, INVASIVE SPECIES, AND CONVERSION OF FOREST TO OTHER USES.
