To provide funding and support for the Santa Fe Public Library
With grants from the Brindle Foundation and the Baby Fund at the Santa Fe Community Foundation, the Friends of the Santa Fe Public Library funds Books & Babies in both English and Spanish/Bilingual. This year-round early childhood reading and activities program serves caretakers and children aged six months to two years. In 2020, due to Covid-19, the Friends provided 2,500 new bilingual books to children in Santa Fe in partnership with local youth-supporting non-profits in order to support early childhood education in Santa Fe. In 2020, the Friends sponsored 13 virtual bilingual Books and Babies video programs with 1,234 views. The Friends of the Santa Fe Public Library provides funding for early childhood and youth after-school and summer reading programs at all three Santa Fe Public library branches. In 2020, the Santa Fe Public Library supported 602 programs for all ages with 13,342 participants. The 2020 summer reading program was conducted virtually for 8 weeks, with 513 participants registered. The program resulted in 272,976 minutes of reading by participants. The program also distributed 1,264 take and make craft kits to Santa Fe youth. There were 50 online programs, including story times, with 4,442 views or participants. To entice children to participate each week, magicians, storytellers, puppeteers and performers put on performances tied to a general reading theme. Programs were provided virtually. A math/summer reading virtual program was provided to 30 children each week.
The Friends of the Santa Fe Public Library provided funding for plans for upgrading all branches of the Santa Fe Public Library, with detailed planning conducted for the LaFarge branch.
The Friends of the Santa Fe Public Library supplements the Santa Fe Public Library's Books and Materials and Technology Services budgets.
