RESIDENTIAL SERVICES: HCSL BOARD MEMBERS WORKED WITH AN EXPERIENCED CONTRACTOR TO RESTORE THE TRADITIONAL MUD PLASTER ON SEVERAL WALLS AND BUILDINGS AT ITS PROPERTY IN JACONA IN SPRING 2020. MANY OF THE ADOBE PLASTER WALLS AND BUILDINGS HAD NOT BEEN EXTENSIVELY MAINTAINED IN AT LEAST TEN YEARS AND WERE IN NEED OF RESTORATION AND REPLASTERING. THE TWO CURRENT RESIDENTS AT THE PROPERTY WITH INTELLECTURAL DISABILITIES HELPED WITH THIS PROCESS BY SCRAPING OFF THE OLD PLASTER AND PREPARING THE WALLS FOR THE NEW PLASTER. THE WORK WAS BEGUN IN JUNE 2020 AND CONTINUED INTO JULY 2020.MANY OTHER REPAIR, MAINTENANCE, AND IMPROVEMENTS PROJECTS WERE DONE TO THE BUILDINGS AND GROUNDS, INCLUDING MAKING THE GARDENS AND GROUNDS MORE ACCESSIBLE TO PEOPLE WITH INTELLECTUAL DISABILITIES.NUMBER OF PEOPLE WHO PARTICIPATED: 8
GARDENING PROGRAM: IN FY 2019/2020, HCSL EXPANDED THE NUMBER OF GARDENS BEDS LOCATED AT ITS 2.5-ACRE RURAL PROPERTY IN JACONA, NEW MEXICO. IN FY 2018/2019, HCSL'S GARDENS CONSISTED OF TWO BEDS THAT PRODUCED TOMATOES, LETTUCE, OTHER GREENS AND ROOT VEGETABLES. IN FY 2019/2020, HCSL MORE THAN DOUBLED THE SIZE OF ITS GARDENS TO FIVE BEDS THAT PRODUCED TOMATOES, LETTUCE, MULTIPLE VARIETIES OF KALE, ONIONS, CARROTS, AND SQUASH, AMONG OTHER VEGETABLES. HCSL ALSO PLANTED A "HEART GARDEN" THAT FEATURED VEGETABLES THAT PROMOTE A HEALTHY HEART, INCLUDING PEPPERS, CHILES, CABBAGE AND EGGPLANTS. IN ADDITION, HCSL CREATED A 20-TREE ORCHARD WITH APPLES, PEACHES, PEARS, CHERRIES, AND PLUM TREES. HCSL ALSO PLANTED RASPBERRIES, BLACKBERRIES AND CURRANTS AS WELL AS POTATOES, BEANS AND TOMATILLOS ALONG THE ORCHARD ROWS. A LONG-TERM GOAL OF HCSL'S GARDENING PROGRAM IS TO SELL ITS FRUITS, VEGETABLES AND HERBS AT LOCAL FARMERS' MARKETS AS WELL AS HOMEMADE JAMS AND JELLIES AND OTHER PRODUCTS MADE FROM PRODUCE GROWN IN ITS GARDENS AND ORCHARDS. HCSL'S EXPANDED VEGETABLE GARDENS, NEW ORCHARD AND "HEART GARDEN" ARE KEY TO REALIZING HCSL'S PROGRAMMING GOAL OF HELPING INTELLECTUALLY DISABLED ADULTS AND THEIR NONDISABLED PEERS TO DEVELOP HEALTHY EATING HABITS THAT FEATURE FRESH FRUITS AND VEGETABLES.BY EXPANDING ITS GARDENS AND CREATING AN ORCHARD, HCSL HAS ESTABLISHED THE GARDENING INFRASTRUCTURE THAT IT WILL NEED TO HAVE IN PLACE TO FORMALLY LAUNCH ITS GARDENING PROGRAM DURING THE SPRING AND SUMMER OF 2021, IF THE COVID-19 PANDEMIC IS MORE CONTROLLED BY THAT POINT AND SOCIAL GATHERINGS ARE PERMITTED. HCSL WAS NOT ABLE TO OFFICIALLY LAUNCH ITS GARDENING PROGRAM IN THE SUMMER OF 2020 AS THE ORGANIZATION ORIGINALLY INTENDED DUE TO HEALTH RESTRICTIONS IMPOSED BY THE STATE OF THE NEW MEXICO TO ADDRESS THE COVID-19 PANDEMIC.
