SINCE BEGINNING THIS PROJECT IN ETHIOPIA IN 2013, PAUL HAS TRAVERSED OVER 11,000 MILES, PUBLISHED ABOUT 400,000 WORDS ON THE NATIONAL GEOGRAPHIC-HOSTED STORYTELLING LABORATORY WEBSITE, WWW.OUTOFEDENWALK.ORG, PRESENTED OUT OF EDEN WALK EDUCATION RESOURCES TO THOUSANDS OF EDUCATORS AND STUDENTS ALONG THE WALKING ROUTE, CO-HOSTED SIX EDUCATIONAL WORKSHOPS FOR GRADE SCHOOL, UNIVERSITY STUDENTS, AND PROFESSIONAL WORKING JOURNALISTS, AND PUBLISHED EIGHT STORIES IN NATIONAL GEOGRAPHIC MAGAZINE (AND DOZENS ON OTHER MEDIA PLATFORMS) TO SHARE THE OUT OF EDEN WALK'S MISSION OF LEARNING BY SLOWING DOWN AND BUILDING A GLOBAL COMMUNITY OF STORYTELLERS THAT PUSH BACK AGAINST THE NARRATIVES OF WALL-BUILDING AND "FAKE NEWS" PERVADING MAINSTREAM MEDIA AND GEOPOLITICAL SPHERES. 2019 ACHIEVEMENTS INCLUDE: 1) IN THE THIRD YEAR OF A FIVE-YEAR GRANT FROM THE ROBERT R. MCCORMICK FOUNDATION IN CHICAGO, "OUT OF EDEN WALK-CHICAGO" (OOEW-C) COMBINES THE POWER OF GRASSROOTS STORYTELLING WITH BOTH INNOVATIVE DIGITAL MAPPING TOOLS AND OLD-FASHIONED NEIGHBORHOOD WALKS TO BUILD A HIGHLY ORIGINAL BRIDGE OF DEEPER UNDERSTANDING, DIALOGUE, AND EMPATHY AMONG CHICAGO'S VARIED COMMUNITIES. THE THREE PRIMARY COMPONENTS OF OOEW-C ARE CIVIC WALKS, MAP-BASED, CITIZEN-GENERATED STORYTELLING, AND CLASSROOM ENGAGEMENT. AFTER TWENTY-FOUR MONTHS, APPROXIMATELY 1,500 STUDENTS HAVE BEEN IMPACTED, PARTICIPATING IN OUT OF EDEN WALK-INSPIRED PROGRAMS SUCH AS COMMUNITY MAPPING, INVESTIGATING THE NATURE OF BORDERS AND CITIZENSHIP IN THEIR OWN AND NEW NEIGHBORHOODS, AND DOCUMENTING NARRATIVES OF THE PEOPLE THEY ENCOUNTER. IN 2019, OVER 400 CHICAGO CITIZENS OF ALL AGES SHARED THEIR OWN STORIES IN THEIR OWN WORDS ON THE FREE, PUBLICLY-AVAILABLE AND SAFE WEB PLATFORM, WWW.HOMESTORYPROJECT.ORG. 2) WITH SUPPORT FROM THE NATIONAL GEOGRAPHIC SOCIETY (NGS), THE OUT OF EDEN WALK EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR PAUL SALOPEK JOINED MULTIPLE EDUCATIONAL WORKSHOP EVENTS, IMPACTING HUNDREDS OF CLASSROOMS AND THOUSANDS OF STUDENTS. 3) OUT OF EDEN WALK BOARD MEMBER DON BELT CONTINUES TO SHARE OUT OF EDEN WALK UNIVERSITY COURSES WITH COLLEGE STUDENTS ACROSS THE COUNTRY IN PARTNERSHIP WITH THE PULITZER CENTER ON CRISIS REPORTING. STUDENT STORYTELLING TEAMS ARE TAUGHT TO "SLOW THEIR REPORTING METABOLISM AND COVER THEMES AND SUBCULTURES IN THEIR CITIES. DON TEACHES HANDS-ON, SLOW JOURNALISM WORKSHOPS AT UNIVERSITIES AROUND THE UNITED STATES TO SHARE HIS WALK-BASED CURRICULUM WITH HUNDREDS OF EDUCATORS FROM THE PULITZER CAMPUS CONSORTIUM NETWORK AND OTHERS. PAST HOST INSTITUTIONS INCLUDE SYRACUSE, NORTHWESTERN, THE UNIVERSITY OF CHICAGO, NOTRE DAME, CORNELL, UNIVERSITY OF TEXAS AT AUSTIN, AND SAN DIEGO STATE, AMONG OTHERS. AND, THROUGH HIS WORKSHOPS AND IN COORDINATION WITH THE JOAN OATES INSTITUTE FOR EXCELLENCE IN TEACHING, DON CONTINUES TO TEACH RICHMOND PUBLIC SCHOOLS STAFF, INCLUDING MORE THAN 130 TEACHERS OVER THE PAST YEAR, HOW TO USE OUT OF EDEN WALK SLOW JOURNALISM IN THEIR CLASSROOMS. 4) OUT OF EDEN WALK'S CARTO-EDUCATION AND INNOVATIVE MAPPING INITIATIVES GREW IN 2019 IN PARTNERSHIP WITH THE HARVARD CENTER FOR GEOGRAPHIC ANALYSIS AND CUSTOMIZED OUT OF EDEN WALK LEARNING MAPS DESIGNED BY LEADING GIS-SOFTWARE DESIGN COMPANY ESRI.
