IT IS ESTIMATED THAT ONLY 26% OF VISUALLY IMPAIRED OKLAHOMANS ARE EMPLOYED. NEWVIEW IS THE LARGEST EMPLOYER OF PEOPLE WHO ARE BLIND AND VISION IMPAIRED IN THE STATE. WE ARE A NATIONAL INDUSTRIES FOR THE BLIND (NIB) AFFILIATED AGENCY AND AN ABILITYONE MEMBER AGENCY.
COMPREHENSIVE VISION REHABILITATION - NEWVIEW PROVIDES SERVICES TO INDIVIDUALS WHO ARE BLIND OR VISION IMPAIRED - A CONDITION THAT CANNOT BE CORRECTED WITH GLASSES, CONTACT LENSES, MEDICINE, OR SURGERY. VISION REHABILITATION INCLUDES THERAPY SPECIFIC TO DAILY NEEDS AND ACTIVITIES, SKILLS TO MOVE SAFELY AND CONFIDENTLY AROUND THE HOME, COMMUNITY, WORKPLACE, AND BEYOND, USE OF COMPUTERS, AND BRAILLE INSTRUCTION. LAST YEAR WE SERVED 1,040 PATIENTS. 95% REPORTED THEIR DAILY LIVING SKILLS IMPROVED. 68% ARE SENIORS, 17% ARE WORKING AGE ADULTS AND 15% ARE PEDIATRIC.
COMMUNITY PROGRAMS - ENCOURAGE COLLABORATION, INSTILL CONFIDENCE, AND CHALLENGE PERCEIVED LIMITS. OWL CAMP (OKLAHOMANS WITHOUT LIMITS) IS TWO SEPARATE WEEK-LONG CAMPS. 25 CAMPERS 8-14 YEARS OF AGE ARE PAIRED WITH SIGHTED BUDDIES FROM LOCAL HIGH SCHOOLS. 15 CAMPERS 15-18 YEARS OF AGE ATTEND A CAMP WITH A HIGHER EMPHASIS ON LEARNING HEALTHY, INDEPENDENT LIVING SKILLS. CREATIVE VISIONS ART PROGRAM SESSIONS ARE 6 WEEKS AND TAUGHT BY PROFESSIONAL ARTISTS. SUPPORT GROUP ACTIVITIES PROMOTE INDEPENDENCE, SELF-CONFIDENCE, AND PROVIDE AN OPPORTUNITY TO SHARE USEFUL INFORMATION.
