To capture, preserve, and teach African-American culture and heritage. To present educational and cultural experiences to foster intercultural exchange and promote cultural tourism.
For the past 25 years, GCC has offered summer programming for more than 200 youth. The programs, the "Young Entrepreneurship" Summer Program and the Children's Defense Fund Freedom Schools Program, also offered summer employment for 22 subcontractors and 10 volunteer opportunities. For the first time, GCC was not able to host those programs this summer due to the COVID-19 pandemic. A limited amount of virtual programming was substituted for the schutter programs. Programs held the summer and fall before the pandemic were a success and plans are underway to find new opportunities to reach our constituents throug the pandemic.
A significant percentage of our operating funds are earned through rental of space at the center Currently, our facility is closed and rentals have been reduced to some outdoor community events and a few press conferences Prior to the pandemic approximately 135,000 tourist and visitors annually surveyed our historical exhibits and held community events at the facility. A signigicant portion of our operating budget sustains the Black Wall Street Mounument, the Mable Little House and Exhibits of the 1921 race massacre.
