NEW HOPE TEACHES CHILDREN OF PRISONERS TO BECOME POSITIVE, PRODUCTIVE, CONTRIBUTING MEMBERS OF SOCIETY. WE DO THIS BY PROVIDING AFTER SCHOOL PROGRAMS, WEEKEND RETREATS, HOLIDAY PARTIES, AND SUMMER CAMPS, TO CHILDREN WHO HAVE OR HAVE HAD A PARENT IN PRISON.
AFTER SCHOOL PROGRAMS - SERVED 150 CHILDREN. NEW HOPE PROVIDED COMMUNITY AFTER SCHOOL PROGRAMS 3 DAYS A WEEK AND SCHOOL-BASED AFTER SCHOOL PROGRAMS 5 DAYS A WEEK IN 9 SCHOOLS IN THE TULSA AREA. MONDAY COMMUNITY AFTER SCHOOL READING READINESS FOR AGES 5-8 YEARS OF AGE; SUPPORT GROUPS FOR AGES 9-17; NEW HOPE USED "GIRLS CIRCLE- AND "BOYS COUNCIL- AND "WHY TRY" CURRICULUM, TUESDAY COMMUNITY AFTER SCHOOL PROVIDES CREATIVE ACTIVITIES INCLUDING GLASS BLOWING, DRUMMING, STEP, COOKING AND VISUAL ARTS WHICH ENCOURAGES POSITIVE PEER RELATIONS, CREATIVITY, TEAM BUILDING AND FOCUS. WEDNESDAY COMMUNITY AFTER SCHOOL PROGRAMS FOCUS ON HEALTH EDUCATION AND ACTIVITIES SUCH AS HEALTHY LIFESTYLE SEC EDUCATION BIKE RIDING,TENNIS, BASKETBALL, DANCE, HIKING.
SIX WEEKS OF SUMMER CAMPING PROVIDED FOR CHILDREN AGES 8-17. NEW HOPE SERVED 150 CHILDREN FROM AROUND THE STATE OF OKLAHOMA DURING THE SUMMER OF 2015. CHILDREN ENJOY SWIMMING, CANOEING, HIKING, SPORTS, ARTS AND CRAFTS AND SMALL GROUPS. OUTCOME FOR 2015 INCLUDED SHORT-TERM 1) YOUTH LEARN NEW LIFE SKILLS INCLUDING ANGER MANAGEMENT/CONFLICT RESOLUTION 2) YOUTH ARE EXPOSED TO OPPORTUNITIES TO INCREASE EMOTIONAL/SOCIAL DEVELOPMENT 3) YOUTH INTEREST WITH POSITIVE ADULTS 4) YOUTH WILL PARTICIPATE IN MAKING CAMP SAFE. LONG TERM 1) YOUTH GAIN CONFIDENCE IN THEIR OWN ABILITY TO MAKE GOOD CHOICES AT HOME/SCHOOL/COMMUNITY 2) YOUTH EXPERIENCE BUILDING A POSITIVE RELATIONSHIP WITH AN ADULT 3) YOUTH PARTICIPATE IN MAKING ENVIROMENTS AWAY FROM CAMP SAFE.
WEEKEND RETREATS: NEW HOPE PROVIDES HORSE RETREATS FOR CHILDREN OF PRISONERS FOUR TIMES A YEAR; SERVICE 24 CHILDREN; CHILDREN LEARN TO FOLLOW INSTRUCTIONS, CARE FOR AN ANIMAL AND EXPERIENCE SUCCESS WHILE LEARNING TO RIDE, GROOM AND CARE FOR HORSES. MANY OF THE CHILDREN HAVE NEVER RIDDEN A HORSE BEFORE THE WEEKEND; THEY LEARN HOW TO RIDE AND HOW TO GIVE INSTRUCTIONS TO THEIR HORSE. BY THE END OF THE WEEKEND THEY EXPERIENCE A HUGE SUCCESS WHILE LEARNING TO RIDE. BY THE END OF THE WEEKEND, THE CHILDREN ARE GETTING THEIR HORSES TO BACKUP ON COMMAND AND MANUEVER AN OBSTACLE COURSE. NEW HOPE ALSO PROVIDED A WEEKEND RETREAT FOR 11 PROSPECTIVE COUNSELORS-IN-TRAINING.
