PRESERVING OKLAHOMA'S AEROSPACE HERITAGE TO INSPIRE SCIENCE-BASED LEARNING THROUGH DISCOVERY.
TO PRESERVE OKLAHOMA'S AEROSPACE HISTORY AND TO INSPIRE SCIENCE-BASED LEARNING THROUGH DISCOVERY, THE TULSA AIR AND SPACE MUSEUM & PLANETARIUM (TASM) HAS CARVED OUT A UNIQUE NICHE IN THE OKLAHOMA MUSEUM COMMUNITY. TASM HAS BEEN EXPOSING STUDENTS TO REAL-WORLD APPLICATIONS OF STEM FOR OVER 15 YEARS. IN 2019, MORE THAN 35,000 STUDENTS PARTICIPATED IN STEM ENGAGEMENT, CONSISTING OF MUSEUM TOURS, HAND-ON ACTIVITIES, INTERACTIVE EXHIBITS, INSPIRATIONAL MESSAGES AND PLANETARIUM EDUCATION PROGRAMMING. EDUCATION IS PROVIDED IN A STIMULATING ENVIRONMENT THAT INCLUDES INSPIRATIONAL STORIES OF AEROSPACE PIONEERS AND EVENTS, UNIQUE AND PRICELESS AIRCRAFT, COMPUTER FLIGHT SIMULATORS, COCKPIT TRAINERS, DEMONSTRATIONS, AND SIMULATED SPACE VOYAGE EXPERIENCES.
EXHIBITS:IN 2019, THERE WERE 32,500 VISITORS WHO TOURED OVER 30 EXHIBITS ON DISPLAY AT TASM. TASM'S AEROSPACE DOCENTS OFFER A GUIDED INTERACTIVE TOUR OF THE EXHIBITS DESCRIBING THE HISTORY OF THE PEOPLE AND PLANES WHICH CONTRIBUTED TO OKLAHOMA'S RICH AEROSPACE HERITAGE. EXHIBITS AVAILABLE TO VISITORS INCLUDE: MD-80 DONATED TO THE MUSEUM BY AMERICAN AIRLINES; THE AIRCRAFT FLEW OVER 39,000 FLIGHTS DURING A 26 YEAR PERIOD. GRUMMAN F14A TOMCAT WHICH IS PAINTED IN THE SQUADRON COLORS OF VF-41 "THE BLACK ACES." SPARTAN EXECUTIVE MODEL 12 COMMISSIONED BY J. PAUL GETTY INCORPORATES A TRICYCLE LANDING GEAR. IN 2019, TASM FEATURED THE FOLLOWING NEW EXHIBITS: APOLLO-A 50 YEAR CELEBRATION AND THE TULSAAMERICAN WHICH WAS BUILT AT THE DOUGLAS PLANT IN TULSA. THE NAME TULSAAMERICAN RESULTED AFTER THE EMPLOYEES BOUGHT WAR BONDS TO COVER THE COST OF THE LAST B-24 BUILT IN TULSA. HOT AIR BALLOON SIMULATOR ALLOWS GUESTS TO STEP INTO A REAL HOT AIR BALLOON BASKET AND SEE IF THEY HAVE THE SKILLS NEEDED TO PILOT THE HOT AIR BALLOON. A RETURNING FAVORITE IS THE SPACE SHUTTLE LAUNCH WHICH ALLOWS GUEST TO BECOME A NASA ENGINEER AND FOLLOW THE SEQUENCE OF STEPS TO LAUNCH OUR 15 FOOT SPACE SPUTTLE STACK.
CAPITAL CAMPAIGN:IN AN EFFORT TO CONTINUE TO BE RECOGNIZED AS THE PREMIER LEARNING CENTER AND TOURIST DESTINATION FOR AVIATION AND SPACE EXPLORATION-PAST, PRESENT AND FUTURE, TASM HAS RECOGNIZED THE NEED TO EXPAND THEIR EXISTING MUSEUM BY ADDING AN ADDITIONAL 34,200 SQ FT. THE EXPANSION WILL HIGHLIGHT A SHUTTLE CREW COMPARTMENT TRAINER FROM NASA AND NUMEROUS SPACE-FLOWN ARTIFACTS FROM THE APOLLO, SKYLAB AND SHUTTLE MISSIONS TO INSPIRE VISITORS OF ALL AGES. THIS NEW EXHIBIT WILL INCREASE TOURISM AND COMPETE WITH OTHER NATIONALLY RENOWNED AIR AND SPACE MUSEUMS. THE EXPANSION WILL ALSO HOUSE ARCHIVES AND COLLECTION AREAS TO MEET MUSEUM ACCREDITATION STANDARDS AS THE MUSEUM PURSUES ACCREDITATION FROM THE AMERICAN ASSOCIATION OF MUSEUMS.
PLANETARIUMTASM IS HOME TO THE JAMES E. BERTELSMEYER PLANETARIUM WHICH INSPIRES CURIOSITY SEEKERS TO EXPLORE OUR UNIVERSE AND THE WONDERS OF EARTH. IN 2019, THERE WERE 32,500 VISITORS WHO TOURED THE PLANETARIUM WHICH OFFERS AN EXCITING EDUCATIONAL EXPERIENCE BY PAIRING STUNNING HIGH-DEFINITION VISUALS WITH STATE OF THE ART TECHNOLOGY IN A FULLY-IMMERSIVE THEATER ATMOSPHERE. VISITORS HAVE THE OPPORTUNITY TO VIEW OVER 12 DIFFERENT FEATURES INCLUDING: STARS WITH NIGHT SKY TOUR; DESTINATION MARS: THE NEW FRONTIER; FASTER THAN LIGHT WITH HOW BIG IS THE UNIVERSE; DAWN OF THE SPACE AGE; BLACK HOLES: THE OTHER SIDE OF INFINITY AND MANY MORE ADVENTURES.
