Organizations Filed Purposes: The Tulsa SPCA's mission is to improve the lives of dogs and cats, and their human companions.

Each year at the Tulsa SPCA, our work seems to be defined by one or two themes. Too often those themes are negative ones such as increased cruelty cases or owner surrenders or even decreased donations. While we did have some challenges in 2019, the year as a whole was overwhelmingly positive. We overcame historic flooding, construction delays and numerous other challenges to end the year on a high note. When we looked at how animals come to be in our care, we identified lack of access to basic, affordable, veterinary care as one of the main reasons. We also know the initial experience animals have with us and the speed with which we can get them medically assessed and cleared often determines how well they do in our care. Because of all these reasons, we decided to focus our improvements, initially, on our clinic. We set ambitious goals for 2019 in a number of areas but none more ambitious than those we set for our clinic. Pet overpopulation, largely due to unwanted litters is a serious issue in our community. We wanted to do our part to help curb the number of animals entering shelters and rescues and made providing affordable spay/neuter surgeries a goal for the year. In 2018 we performed 1,440 spay/neuter surgeries but set our 2019 goal at 4,150. Our plans included completing our new clinic in early spring which would double our surgery capacity. Unfortunately, weather and other construction delays resulted in a move-in date at the end of December, over six months later than anticipated. Our amazing staff and volunteers adapted to the challenges and were able to not only meet our goal but exceed it by 240 surgeries for a total of 4,390 for the year! Conservatively, this number of surgeries prevented tens of thousands of unwanted births in one year alone. Additionally, after much needed repairs we put our refurbished mobile medical unit into use, providing low-cost vaccines to residents in locations around town. Although we only did vaccine clinics with our mobile unit in 2019, our plan is to offer mobile spay/neuter clinics in the future. In all, we provided almost 15,000 low-cost vaccinations and a variety of other affordable clinic services. Our intake and placement programs also exceeded our expectations. Our goal for the year was 1,000 placements for a 20% increase over 2018. There is nothing better than watching a family meet and fall in love with their new family member and we were lucky enough to make those meetings a reality for 1,127 dogs and cats. Our final number translated to a 36% increase. Our mission to improve the lives of dogs and cats, and their human companions is made a reality not just by our staff, but by the volunteers who donate their time and talent to our agency. In 2019, we had 403 active volunteers who gave 12,695 hours to our various programs. That is equivalent to more than six full-time employees!Additionally, the work we do is only possible because of the financial generosity of our supporters. The Tulsa SPCA is not affiliated with any national organizations, nor do we receive any government funding. All the work we do is a result of private donations made directly to our organization. This work, although often difficult both physically and emotionally, is so meaningful. The dogs and cats we help want nothing more than to love and be loved. Being able to help make that a reality is a privilege.
