The mission is to provide expanded learning opportunities that develop character, instill values, and equip youth for success through academic, enrichment, and sports activities; specifically serve youth attending Title 1, low-performing schools or living in high poverty areas. Core programs for the elementary clients include daily homework help/tutoring followed by enrichment clubs. Club opportunities include S.T.E.M. and S.T.E.A.M. (science, technology, engineering, arts and math), robotics, cooking, tutoring, mentoring, sports (tennis, basketball), health and nutrition, and field trips. Our junior high program is offered as part of AfterOpp, a collaborative partnership that offers interest-based club options, including robotics, theater, ceramics, coding, soccer, academic assistance and field trips. In 2019, YAH served 606 children and teens, ages 6 14, in the following demographics: Male (52%), and females (48%). Race/Ethnicity included African American (51%), Caucasians (19%), Hispanic (14%), and other (16%).Two participants submitted winning entries (10 & under category) to the United States Tennis Association (USTA) Arthur Ashe essay contest. The students were honored for their accomplishments at the USTA Oklahoma Awards Banquet in Tulsa OK.55 (58%) of the 95 students tested of the Walt Whitman Elementary participants improved in reading proficiency: We utilized Oklahoma State Testing Program (OSTP) and Measures of Academic Progress (MAP) benchmark testing results that are given to specific grade levels during the fall, winter, and spring. Using spring and winter state MAP data, about 58% of students (55 of the 95 tested) experienced growth in their reading scores. This is slightly lower than the 61% in 2018. It should be noted that the Whitman site experienced unexpected turnover of two site directors in 2019. Additionally, a revamped literacy program was introduced by the new site director in the fall. It is too early to see the full impact this renewed focus has had on student literacy growth. However, some teachers have reported significant signs of improvement in specific participants reading.69% of students improved in self-management skills: Of the 72 children tracked, 69% achieved this outcome measured by a Personal Character Questionnaire. The survey tool was administered to students before and after they participated in the Peekapak program, a curriculum with special emphasis on social emotional learning (SEL). During the initial pre-assessment, students rated at 64% that they took ownership of their actions. Post test results reflected that 69% of students took ownership of their actions. One of the possible reasons for the slight increase in the results is students had a better understanding of why accepting responsibility was important.79% of students received exposure to diverse enrichment clubs: 79% of students (239) achieved this goal. We attribute not reaching the goal to a high enrollment of new students in the fall where they did not have an opportunity to be in the program long enough to experience several club opportunities.Other stats: Engaged 195 volunteers who donated 2,005 hours as tutors, lunch buddies, tennis coaches, and United Ways Day of Caring volunteers; Served 9,803 meals during afterschool and summer programs; provided 46 field trips to students.
