Our mission is to educate, train and support children and adolescents with diabetes in Puerto Rico, through programs that impact their family's environment, school, and social surroundings, to promote healthy lifestyles and help them attain the optimal management of their condition.
Summer educational program, workshops and educational activities: On July 2019, 36 children with type 1 Diabetes (insulin-dependent) participated in Diabetes Summer Camps held in Ponce, Puerto Rico, ages 6 to 17. It consisted of one week. The other three sections of summer camp were not able to be coordinated for summer 2020 (San Juan, Aguadilla and Humacao) because of the CIVID-19 Pandemic, which started on March 2020. The Camp combines diabetes education, support and treatment with recreational activities and sports. It allows participants to create networking, learn adequate Diabetes management and healthy habits, among others. It is free of charge for diabetic children since summer of 2002. Is the only summer day camp currently in Puerto Rico. Funding received from donators, companies and educational grants makes camp possible. Diabetes Workshops were coordinated in 2019 but could not be held on 2020 because of the earthquakes on January 2020 and later due to the pandemic. A total of 141 people were impacted from August 2019 through December 2020. Parents, caregivers, children with diabetes and their siblings were impacted. On November 16, 2019, our special educational event was held commemorating the Diabetes Month, organized for families of children with type 1 diabetes. A total of 338 people participated. Annually approximately 1,000 people were impacted by the educational workshops and activities, including children 0-21 years with the condition. So, a decrease do to the Pandemic and earthquakes was observed.
Individual nutritional consults and psychological therapy (professional services): 1,175 children with diabetes received nutritional consults by certified nutritionists and 603 received psychological therapy by psychologist. All resources all trained in diabetes management. Services were offered free of charge in our main office in San Juan, and three satellite offices in the Southern (Ponce), Western (Aguadilla) and Eastern (Humacao) regions. Each office has its coordinator of patient services that organizes the schedule for the nutritional and psychological consults. Since children received services with at least their parents the impact is considered to be 5,334 people impacted by these services. The organization provides services without discrimination due to location, race, economic status, educational attainment of the families. During the pandemic from April 2020 through June 2020, services were offered both virtually and on site.
Diabetes education for school personnel: Diabetes Education Program for School Personnel and classmates of the student with type 1 diabetes, throughout Puerto Rico: school year 2019-2020 This program responds to the need and rights (as per federal and state legislation) of children and adolescents with Juvenile Diabetes to have schools and day care centers with educated personnel on the adequate management of the disease.
