THE CHARLESTON ACADEMY OF MUSIC IS COMMITTED TO PROVIDING ACCESS TO EXCEPTIONAL MUSIC EDUCATION, PERFORMANCE AND COMMUNITY OUTREACH TO ALL, REGARDLESS OF AGE, SKILL, GENDER, ETHNICITY OR INCOME.
ACADEMIC PROGRAM THE ACADEMIC PROGRAM PROVIDES A COMPLETE MUSIC EDUCATION OF THE HIGHEST QUALITY TO PREPARE STUDENTS FOR PROFESSIONAL CAREERS AS MUSICIANS, MUSIC EDUCATORS, AND LIFELONG ADVOCATES OF CLASSICAL MUSIC. STUDENTS OF THE ACADEMIC PROGRAM MAY CHOOSE TO RECEIVE MUSICAL INSTRUCTION IN PIANO, JAZZ PIANO, VOICE, VIOLIN, VIOLA, ORGAN, TRUMPET, CELLO, CLASSICAL GUITAR, JAZZ GUITAR, FLUTE, CLARINET, AND HARP. MUSICAL INSTRUCTION INCLUDES PRIVATE LESSONS AND VARIOUS CLASSES, SUCH AS THEORY, EAR TRAINING, COMPOSITION, MASTERCLASSES AND PERFORMANCE CLASSES, AS WELL AS STRING ENSEMBLES AND GUITAR ORCHESTRA. ALL STUDENTS WILL HAVE MANY PERFORMANCE OPPORTUNITIES THROUGHOUT EACH SEMESTER. THE PROGRAM HAS APPROXIMATELY 180 STUDENTS DRAWN FROM THE LOCAL AREA. THE PROGRAM WAS CONDUCTED BY 20 EXPERIENCED MUSIC TEACHERS AND TYPICALLY LASTED FOR 30 LESSONS PLUS OPTIONAL INSTRUCTION DURING THE SUMMER MONTHS. DURING 2019 WE RELOCATED DOWNTOWN CAMPUS TO 342 MEETING STREET WE OPENED AN ADDITIONAL CAMPUS IN MT. PLEASANT AT 2612 LARCH LANE, SUITE 111. WE RELOCATED RUSH HOUR CONCERT SERIES TO THE SANCTUARY OF THE 2ND PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH WHICH ALLOWS A MUCH LARGER SEATING SPACE. WE REFRAMED OUR MARKETING PRESENCE BY REDESIGNING THE LOGO, THE WEBSITE, AND THE EMAIL TO ALLOW MORE ONLINE CAPABILITIES FOR OUR CLIENTS, AS WELL AS TO HAVE A MORE PROFESSIONAL AND COMPETITIVE PRESENCE. WE LAUNCHED THE FIRST ANNUAL SONATINA FESTIVAL WHICH IS AN EVENT OPEN TO PIANISTS OF VARIOUS AGES TO COMPETE FOR CASH PRIZES IN PERFORMANCE AND COMPOSITION CATEGORIES BY DEMONSTRATING THEIR TECHNICAL, ARTISTIC, AND ANALYTICAL SKILLS FOR A PANEL OF JUDGES. WE HELD TWO MASTER CLASSES WITH NATIONALLY RECOGNIZED PEDAGOGUES - IN CELLO AND PIANO. WE HELD SUMMER MUSIC FEST, A ONE WEEK LONG EVENT WITH A FULL-DAY OF IN- DEPTH MUSIC ACTIVITIES, SUCH AS CLASSES, LESSONS, AND CHAMBER MUSIC REHEARSALS THAT CULMINATED IN A FINAL PERFORMANCE OPENED TO THE PUBLIC. SEVERAL OF ACADEMY'S STUDENTS ENJOYED STATE-WIDE AND NATIONAL SUCCESS AS THEY ACHIEVED TOP PRIZES IN SUCH COMPETITIONS AS MUSIC TEACHERS NATIONAL ASSOCIATION, STEINWAY YOUNG ARTIST PIANO COMPETITION, SOUTH CAROLINA GOVERNOR'S SCHOOL FOR ARTS AND HUMANITIES YOUNG ARTIST COMPETITION. 7 STUDENTS AUDITIONED AND WERE ACCEPTED INTO CHARLESTON COUNTY SCHOOL OF THE ARTS. IN ADDITION, OUR STUDENTS WERE SHOWCASED IN THE 2019 PICCOLO SPOLETO FESTIVAL SPECIAL PERFORMANCE. FOUR ACADEMY'S FACULTY SERVED ON THE EXECUTIVE BOARD OF THE CHARLESTON MUSIC TEACHERS ASSOCIATION. NEW FACULTY MEMBER WAS HIRED: RYO HASEGAWA AS PIANO INSTRUCTOR. WE CONTINUED OUR MUSIC DISCOVERY CLASSES THAT ARE DESIGNED AS EARLY CHILDHOOD MUSIC EDUCATION PROGRAM FOR 3 AND 4-YEAR OLD STUDENTS TO INTRODUCE THEM TO THE ART OF MUSIC AND ITS BASIC CONCEPTS THROUGH INTERACTIVE GAMES AND EURHYTHMICS. WE ALSO OPENED A SUZUKI PROGRAM FOR 4- YEAR OLD STRING PLAYERS. WE CONDUCTED ORCHESTRA PROGRAM AT MARY FORD ELEMENTARY SCHOOL (TITLE I) AT NO COST TO THE STUDENTS. THEORY AND COMPOSITION CLASSES ALL STUDENTS ARE ENCOURAGED TO ATTEND ONE OF THESE TWO THEORY CLASSES: THEORY AND EAR TRAINING. THIS CLASS IS A FUN AND INTERACTIVE CLASS SUITABLE FOR BEGINNERS AND INTERMEDIATE LEVEL STUDENTS OF ALL INSTRUMENTS, INCLUDING VOICE. NO PREVIOUS EXPERIENCE IS NECESSARY. COMPOSITION AND SONGWRITING. THIS CLASS IS FOR THE STUDENTS TO LEARN TO UTILIZE THEIR MUSICAL KNOWLEDGE AND INSTRUMENTAL SKILLS TO PRODUCE THEIR OWN COMPOSITIONS. TO ATTEND THIS CLASS, NOTE READING ABILITY AND BASIC THEORY KNOWLEDGE ARE REQUIRED. IN ADDITION, STUDENTS ARE ALSO WELCOME TO UTILIZE THE COMPUTER-BASED THEORY LEARNING PROGRAM, AVAILABLE IN OUR LOBBY AT ALL TIMES. STUDENTS MUST FIRST CONTACT THE OFFICE OR THEIR TEACHER TO SET UP AN ACCOUNT, AND THEN PARTICIPATE IN THE SELF-GUIDED PROGRAM. ACCESS TO THE COMPUTER IS ON A FIRST-COME, FIRST-SERVED BASIS. SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM THE ORGANIZATION'S SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM IS DESIGNED FOR STUDENTS WHO ARE SERIOUSLY COMMITTED TO THE MUSICAL TRAINING. THE SCHOLARSHIPS ARE DIVIDED INTO MERIT BASED AND FINANCIAL NEED BASED AWARDS. STUDENTS CAN APPLY FOR THE PROGRAM BY FILLING OUT REQUIRED PAPERWORK, WRITE A PERSONAL STATEMENT AND PROVIDE A LETTER OF RECOMMENDATION FROM A TEACHER. APPLICANTS MUST AUDITION AND/OR PASS INTERVIEW TO BE CONSIDERED FOR AN AWARD. UPON THE RECEIPT OF THE SCHOLARSHIP, STUDENTS SIGN THE CONTRACT COMMITTING TO CERTAIN HOURS OF PRACTICE, REGULAR LESSON AND CONCERT ATTENDANCE, AND VOLUNTEER HOURS. FACULTY ENSEMBLES TERRANOVA PIANO TRIO: THIS ENSEMBLE CONSISTS OF THE CORE VIOLIN, PIANO, AND CELLO FACULTY MEMBERS (CHRISTIAN ZAMORA, IRINA PEVZNER, AND YUN HAO JIANG, RESPECTIVELY) AND FUNCTIONS AS ACADEMY'S TRADEMARK OF EXCELLENT PROFESSIONAL PERFORMING. IT SERVES TWO PURPOSES: INSPIRE STUDENTS AND DELIVER CLASSICAL MUSIC TO OUR COMMUNITY. TERRANOVA PERFORMS PUBLIC CONCERTS AND CONDUCTS OUTREACH CONCERTS IN PUBLIC SCHOOLS TO HELP LOCAL MUSIC TEACHERS ENHANCE THEIR CURRICULUM. IN 2019 THE ENSEMBLE WAS INVITED TO PERFORM DURING THE NORTH CHARLESTON ARTS FESTIVAL. THE ECLIPSE ENSEMBLE FORMERLY NEW MUSIC ENSEMBLE) IS A PERFORMANCE GROUP CONSISTING OF CHARLESTON ACADEMY OF MUSIC FACULTY WHO SPECIALIZE IN A WIDE SPECTRUM OF CLASSICAL MUSIC FROM THE 20TH CENTURY TO THE PRESENT, PLAYING AN INSTRUMENTAL ROLE IN DIVERSIFYING CHARLESTONS MUSIC CULTURE. BESIDES COMMISSIONING LIVING COMPOSERS TO CREATE NEW WORKS FOR THE ENSEMBLE, THEY SPECIALIZE IN AVANT-GARDE ART MUSIC, CONCERT PRESENTATION OF WORKS SOURCED FROM MUSICAL THEATRE, CABARET, HISTORICAL AND CONTEMPORARY MEDIA, AS WELL AS MUSIC INFLUENCED BY A VARIETY OF CULTURES AND NATIONALITIES.
