Organizations Filed Purposes:
EMPOWER INDIVIDUALS WHO HAVE DEVELOPMENTAL DISABILITIES AND ADVOCATE ON THEIR BEHALF TO FACILITATE MEANINGFUL EMPLOYMENT, RECREATIONAL, AND SOCIAL OPPORTUNITIES, AND PROVIDE COMMUNITY-BASED SERVICES AND AFFORDABLE HOUSING IN AN INCLUSIVE COMMUNITY OF THEIR CHOICE.
THRIFT STORE: THE OKATIE AREA THRIFT STORE PROVIDES ONGOING OPERATIONAL FUNDS THAT ARE DEDICATED TO DEVELOPING A "NEIGHBORHOOD WITH A PURPOSE" TO SUPPORT INTELLECTUALLY AND DEVELOPMENTALLY DISABLED (IDD) ADULTS IN THE AREA. THE THRIFT STORE ALSO SERVES AS A JOB/VOCATIONAL TRAINING SETTING FOR THESE SPECIAL NEEDS ADULTS. IN NOVEMBER 2016, THE ORGANIZATION SIGNED A LEASE TO OPEN A NEW THRIFT STORE ON HILTON HEAD ISLAND THAT ALSO PROVIDES 1300 SQ FT OF OFFICE SPACE FOR THE STAFF TO MEET WITH CLIENTS, A CONFERENCE ROOM FOR BOARD MEETINGS, AND ADDITIONAL SPACE FOR PARTNER ORGANIZATIONS TO WORK WITH OSPREY VILLAGE. THE NEW THRIFT STORE AND OFFICES OPENED IN LATE MARCH 2017 AND A LOCAL NONPROFIT ORGANIZATION HAS BEEN ENGAGED THAT SERVES ADULTS WITH IDD TO HAVE A WORK ENCLAVE COME AND CLEAN THE NEW STORE AND OFFICE AREAS.
HOUSING DEVELOPMENT: BUILD A COMMUNITY TO ASSIST ADULTS WITH DEVELOPMENTAL DISABILITIES AND SUPPORTIVE FAMILIES. OSPREY VILLAGE WILL IMPLEMENT AND "INTENTIONAL COMMUNITY" CONCEPT IN OUR NEIGHBORHOOD WHICH WILL BE ONE OF THE FIRST OF ITS TYPE IN THE UNITED STATES. THE ORGANIZATION IS CURRENTLY IN THE RESEARCH AND FUNDRAISING PHASE HAVING JUST ACQUIRED THE PROPERTY SITE AT THE END OF 2017. THE ORGANIZATION HAS BEEN APPROVED AS A QUALIFIED SERVICE PROVIDER BY THE SC DEPARTMENT OF DISABILITIES AND SPECIAL NEEDS IN MARCH 2016, AND WAS RE-APPROVED IN OCTOBER 2016. THE ORGANIZATION BEGAN HIRING AND TRAINING STAFF IN AUGUST 2016 AND BEGAN PROVIDING RESPITE CARE SERVICES TO CLIENTS IN NOVEMBER 2016. THE SERVICES HAVE BEEN EXPANDED TO PROVIDE JOB TRAINING AND RELATED SERVICES IN EARLY 2017 AND THE SERVICE HOURS ARE GROWING EVERY MONTH AS NEW CLIENTS ARE GRADUALLY TAKEN ON. THE ORGANIZATION IS ALSO WORKING WITH THE LOCAL TECHNICAL COLLEGE OF THE LOW COUNTRY TO DEVELOP AN EMPLOYEE AND CLIENT TRAINING PROGRAM WHICH WILL BE NAMED "OSPREY VILLAGE ACADEMY". THIS WILL PROVIDE TRAINING FOR SERVICE PERSONELL FOR BOTH THE ORGANIZATION AND OTHER SERVICE ORGANIZATIONS AS WELL AS FOR HIGHER FUNCTIONING CLIENTS WHO ARE SEEKING SPECIALIZED VOCATIONAL TRAINING. OSPREY VILLAGE ALSO WAS APPROVED AS A DESIGNATED NONPROFIT BY SC HOUSING FINANCE & DEVELOPMENT AUTHORITY IN 2016, ENABLING IT TO APPLY FOR A VARIETY OF POTENTIAL FUNDING RESOURCES INCLUDING THE SC HOUSING TRUST FUND, NATIONAL HOUSING TRUST FUND, LIHTC, SUPPORTIVE HOUSING PROGRAM, GROUP HOME PROGRAM, AND OTHERS.
