Organizations Filed Purposes: THE MISSION OF THE SOUTH CAROLINA ACADEMY OF FAMILY PHYSICIANS IS TO IMPROVE THE HEALTH CARE OF ALL SOUTH CAROLINIANS THROUGH SUPPORTING AND REPESENTING THE SPECIALTY OF FAMILY MEDICINE.

LEGISLATIVE COORDINATOR/EXPENSES EACH YEAR. EACH YEAR LEGISLATION IS INTRODUCED OR AMENDED IN THE SC GENERAL ASSEMBLY THAT AFFECTS PATIENTS, PATIENT CARE AND THE PRACTICE OF MEDICINE. THE ACADEMY TAKES A PROACTIVE APPROACH BY PARTICIPATING IN THE LEGISLATIVE ARENA WITH THE ASSISTANCE OF A CONTRACT LEGISLATIVE COORDINATOR. SHE PROVIDES INFORMATION ON LEGISLATION THAT IS INTRODUCED, PENDING OR SEEKS TO AMEND CURRENT LAW; INTERACTS WITH ELECTED OFFICIALS; REPRESENTS THE FAMILY MEDICINE POINT OF VIEW TO THE GENERAL ASSEMBLY AND STATE AGENCIES

ANNUAL ASSEMBLY THE ASSEMBLY PROGRAM IS DEVELOPED BY THE SCAFP CONTINUING PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT COMMITTEE FOR FAMILY PHYSICIANS AND OTHER HEALTH CARE PROVIDERS; IT OFFERS A VARIETY OF CONTINUING MEDICAL EDUCATION TOPICS PERTINENT TO PATIENT CARE IN A DAILY PRACTICE. EACH PRESENTATION HAS SPECIFIC OBJECTIVES SO THAT AT THE CONCLUSION OF THE PROGRAM THE LEARNER WILL HAVE A WORKING AND APPLICABLE UNDERSTANDING OF THE TOPIC. TOPICS INCLUDED PSYCHIATRY IN PRIMARY CARE, PAIN MANAGEMENT AD OPIOIDS: BALANCING RISK & BENEFITS, CODING UPDATES ON TRANSITIONAL CARE, NEW DRUG UPDATE, DIABETIC PATHOPHYSIOLOGY & MEDICATION CHOICE, LIFESTYLE MEDICINE FOR PREVENTION & REVERSAL OF DISEASE AND OTHERS. ONE WORKSHOP WAS OFFERED, POINT OF CARE ULTRASOUND. ONE KNOWLEDGE SELF ASSESSMENT (KSAS) WORKING GROUP ON HEALTH BEHAVIOR FOR MEMBERS WORKING ON BOARD RE-CERTIFICATION.

STUDENTS, RESIDENTS AND OUTREACH THE SOUTH CAROLINA ACADEMY CO-HOSTS AN ANNUAL FAMILY MEDICINE INTEREST DAY TO ENCOURAGE MEDICAL STUDENTS TO CHOOSE A FAMILY MEDICINE RESIDENCY PROGRAM UPON GRADUATION FROM MEDICAL SCHOOL. THE GOAL IS TO ENSURE THERE WILL BE AN INCREASED SUPPLY OF FAMILY PHYSICIANS TO TAKE CARE OF THE GROWING HEALTH CARE NEEDS OF OUR STATE. OVER 30 RESIDENT MEMBERS PRESENTED SCHOLARLY PRESENTATIONS DURING THE ANNUAL ASSEMBLY. THE PRESENTATIONS WERE JUDGED BY A COMMITTEE AND WINNERS CHOSEN IN TWO CATEGORIES, RESEARCH AND QUALITY IMPROVEMENT.
