Seeking to put God's love into action, the South Carolina Association of Habitat for Humanity Affiliates brings people together to build homes, communities, and hope.
The state support organization expands the capacity of 30 local Habitat affiliates. It is the leadership body and statewide voice, leveraging Habitat's collective impact to promote transformational change and improve home affordability for South Carolinians through advocacy, resource development, education/training, and disaster services. Serving 36 counties, Habitat affiliates have built over 2,862 new homes, repaired 1,123 houses, and rehabilitated 126 homes - investing over $200 million in affordable housing since 1978. Over $640,000 is added to SC's economy for every Habitat home built.
Hosted 58 education and/or training sessions for 908 Habitat attendees throughout 35 counties. Prior to the coronavirus pandemic, sessions were held quarterly by department. In March 2020, the organization moved its training online to increase frequency and maintain critical safety standards in the COVID-19 environment. Educational focus areas included: operations, management, resource development, ReStore, community engagement, advocacy, disaster services, volunteer engagement, construction, mortgage services, and COVID-19 response. South Carolina Habitat also created a ReStore Task Force to assist Habitat affiliates in creating a COVID-19 Reopening Guide, focused on restarting operations and promoting best practices for health/safety considerations. This guide was requested by other state Habitat associations across the nation, as well as the Habitat for Humanity International office.
State support office provides publicity and advocacy for Habitat affiliates and their mission work in South Carolina. Habitat footprint in SC includes: 1 affiliate support organization; 30 local affiliates; 27 ReStores; 35K volunteers/year; 35 priority counties for building. An economic impact report found that $640K was injected into SC's economy for each new home built. In March 2020, org immediately began responding to the impact of COVID-19 on SC's Habitat network. Impact included increased costs to operate (heightened demand for services, unexpected health and safety operational expenses, and significantly fewer volunteers) and revenue losses (temp store closures and cancelled fundraising events) Vocal advocate for the creation of a COVID-19 Housing Assistance Fund. Supported Habitat International with Congressional advocacy efforts, and facilitated meetings with lawmakers, elected officials, and state agencies to raise awareness on housing issues and the impact of COVID-19 on access to affordable homeownership. Chosen as a "Cost of Home" state field organizer for Habitat International. Prominent contributor to the 2020 South Carolina Housing Attainability Conference, serving as both a Community Partner and a Collaborative Committee planning member.
Developed partnerships focused on financial support, in-kind donations, and collaborative agreements to broaden Habitat's impact on the housing needs of South Carolinians. Increased its role as a Volunteer Organization Active in Disaster, assisting affiliates with Long Term Recovery efforts centered on housing needs. Four Habitat affiliates were impacted by the April 2020 tornadoes; SC Habitat coordinated the distribution of $3,000 in grocery gift cards to the nine impacted counties. Equipment donations were supplied to 12 affiliates in advance of future weather disasters. Focused heavily on COVID-19 relief. SC affiliates reported the following construction delays between March-June 2020: 92 home repairs, 50 new builds, and 6 rehabs. Twenty-six home closings were delayed. During the lockdown, 69 construction projects fully shutdown and 27 ReStores temp closed to the public. The state support office developed partnerships and increased collaboration among affiliates to address the simultaneous increase in cost to operate, along with decreased volunteer engagement. Between May-June 2020, org led a major PPE distribution initiative supporting 31 Habitat entities with a total of 150,000 masks, 600 gallons of hand sanitizer, 26,000 gloves, and 100 ponchos.
