Organizations Filed Purposes: SINCE ITS FOUNDING, OUR MISSION HAS ALWAYS STAYED THE SAME: THE PREVENTION OF CRUELTY TO ANIMALS. IN 1874, CHARLESTON ANIMAL SOCIETY BECAME THE FIRST ANIMAL ORGANIZATION IN SOUTH CAROLINA AND ONE OF THE FIRST IN THE NATION AND HAS NEVER TURNED OUR LOCAL ANIMALS AWAY.

ANIMAL CARE: THROUGH AN ARRAY OF LIFESAVING SERVICES OFFERED BOTH IN THE SHELTER AND IN UNDERSERVED COMMUNITIES, CHARLESTON ANIMAL SOCIETY (CAS) SHELTERED 8,728 ANIMALS, REUNITED 923 PETS; TRAPPED, STERILIZED AND RETURNED 1,528 FREE ROAMING CATS; ADOPTED 5,266 ANIMALS; FOSTERED 2,495 INJURED AND ILL ANIMALS; INVESTIGATED 84 CRUELTY CASES; ASSISTED 1,525 FAMILIES WITH THEIR PET CARE AND MEDICAL NEEDS AND DISTRIBUTED 40,552 POUNDS OF FOOD TO HUNGRY PETS. IN ADDITION, CAS PROVIDES REFUGE FOR 200 FREE ROAMING CATS IN ITS FELINE FREEDOM SANCTUARY.

VETERINARY TREATMENT: LAST YEAR, CHARLESTON ANIMAL SOCIETY PLACED ITS HANDS ON UPWARD OF 20,000 ANIMALS, MOST OF WHOM RECEIVED SOME FORM OF TREATMENT DUE TO THEIR INJURIES AND ILLNESSES OR TO PREVENT THEM FROM BECOMING ILL. LED BY A TEAM OF 5 VETERINARIANS, MEDICAL STAFF ADMINISTERED AND DISTRIBUTED 26,889 VACCINES TO PREVENT THE OUTBREAK OF DEADLY DISEASES, SPAYED OR NEUTERED 9,662 ANIMALS TO PREVENT THE BIRTH OF UNWANTED LITTERS AND PROVIDED MEDICAL ASSESSMENTS AND FOLLOW-UP CARE TO 10,239 ANIMALS, REPRESENTING DOZENS OF SPECIES, ENTERING THE SHELTER.

EDUCATION: GROWING CHILDREN INTO HUMANITARIANS REQUIRES EDUCATION THAT IS SOUND, INTERACTIVE, MOTIVATIONAL, COMPASSIONATE AND TRANSFERABLE BETWEEN BOTH ANIMALS AND HUMANS. CAS'S AWARD-WINNING MULTI-FACETED EDUCATION PROGRAM INTRODUCED OVER 13,503 STUDENTS TO 22,236 HUMANE EDUCATION LESSONS. IN ADDITION, 356 AND COUNTING ANIMAL WELFARE PROFESSIONALS FROM NEARLY EVERY STATE IN THE NATION AND SEVERAL COUNTRIES ACROSS THE GLOBE PARTICIPATED IN CONTINUING LIFESAVING EDUCATION OFFERED BY CAS. APPROXIMATELY 19 VETERINARIANS ACROSS SOUTH CAROLINA AND VETERINARY STUDENTS FROM AROUND THE COUNTRY ENROLLED IN CAS EDUCATION WORKSHOPS AND INTERNSHIPS. LASTLY, 24 FAMILIES PARTICIPATED IN CAS CANINE COLLEGE LEARNING FROM THE BEST OF THE BEST CERTIFIED DOG TRAINERS.
