SUSTAINABLE WATER PROGRAMS: WATER MISSION TAKES A COMPREHENSIVE APPROACH TO COMBATING THE GLOBAL WATER CRISIS BY PROVIDING SAFE WATER, SANITATION, AND HYGIENE (WASH) SOLUTIONS FOR PEOPLE IN DEVELOPING COUNTRIES AND DISASTER AREAS. SINCE 2001, WATER MISSION HAS PROVIDED NEARLY 7 MILLION PEOPLE IN 57 COUNTRIES WITH ACCESS TO LIFESAVING WASH SOLUTIONS, INCLUDING MORE THAN 1.6 MILLION PEOPLE IN 2020. WATER MISSION'S HOLISTIC STRATEGY RELIES ON COLLABORATIVE PARTNERSHIPS WITH LOCAL LEADERS, WHICH EMPOWERS COMMUNITIES TO MANAGE WASH PROJECTS INDEPENDENTLY IN THE LONG TERM AND TO ENSURE THE EQUITABLE DISTRIBUTION OF WASH SOLUTIONS. WATER MISSION HAS MORE THAN 400 STAFF WORKING IN OUR U.S. HEADQUARTERS AND NINE COUNTRY OFFICES, NEARLY ALL OF WHOM ARE NATIONALS OF THE COUNTRIES IN WHICH THEY WORK.
DISASTER RESPONSE: RELIEF AND RESILIENCE: WATER MISSION HAS PROVIDED RELIEF FOLLOWING MORE THAN 50 NATURAL AND HUMANITARIAN DISASTERS. WATER MISSION'S TECHNICAL EXPERTISE INFORMS THE CREATION OF INNOVATIVE, CUSTOMIZED SOLUTIONS TO FIT COMMUNITIES' UNIQUE NEEDS FOLLOWING DISASTERS - SOLUTIONS THAT PROVIDE BOTH SHORT-TERM RELIEF AND LONG-TERM RESILIENCE. IN 2020, FOR INSTANCE, WATER MISSION RESPONDED TO A CRISIS OF UNPRECENDENTED SCALE: THE COVID-19 PANDEMIC. WATER MISSION'S GLOBAL TEAMS RAPIDLY DESIGNED A BEST-IN-CLASS, REGIONALLY ADAPTABLE RELIEF PROGRAM, WHICH INCLUDED INSTALLING NEARLY 8,400 EMERGENCY HANDWASHING STATIONS AND CONDUCTING HEALTH AND HYGIENE PROMOTION TRAINING. LONGSTANDING PARTNERSHIPS WITH INTERNATIONAL AND GOVERNMENT AGENCIES ALLOW WATER MISSION TO ENTER DISASTER-AFFECTED AREAS IN THE IMMEDIATE AFTERMATH TO ASSESS NEEDS, IMPLEMENT SAFE WATER SOLUTIONS, AND COMMUNICATE REAL-TIME INFORMATION VIA WATER MISSION'S GLOBAL INCIDENT PLATFORM.
SERVING REFUGEE POPULATIONS: IN 2020, THE GLOBAL REFUGEE POPULATION SWELLED FROM 70 MILLION TO 80 MILLION PEOPLE. WATER MISSION'S GLOBAL TEAMS SERVED MORE THAN 600,000 REFUGEES AND DISPLACED PERSONS FLEEING WAR, VIOLENCE, AND PERSECUTION DURING THIS TIME. WATER MISSION IS CURRENTLY THE WATER AND SANITATION LEAD IN THE NORTHERN UGANDAN REFUGEE SETTLEMENTS OF BIDIBIDI, IMVEPI, AND RHINO CAMP. WATER MISSION IS ALSO THE LEAD IMPLEMENTOR OF THE NEW WATER TREATMENT AND SOLAR PUMPING SOLUTIONS IN WESTERN TANZANIA REFUGEE CAMPS OF NYARUGUSU AND NDUTA. IN 2020, THE NYARUGUSU REFUGEE CAMP BECAME THE LARGEST REFUGEE CAMP IN THE WORLD WHOSE COMPLETE WATER SUPPLY IS FULLY TREATED, MEETING THE WORLD HEALTH ORGANIZATION'S WATER QUALITY STANDARDS, AND IS ENTIRELY POWERED BY SOLAR PUMPING SOLUTIONS.
