THE CHM SERVES OUR SCHOOL COMMUNITY THROUGH A BROAD RANGE OF PROGRAMS SERVING PRE-KINDERGARTEN THROUGH ADULT IN CONTENT AREAS INCLUDING HISTORY, NATURAL HISTORY, ASTRONOMY, AND EDUCATION. WE OFFER A VARIETY OF ENGAGING EDUCATIONAL OPPORTUNITIES FROM EARLY CHILDHOOD PROGRAMS AND EVENTS AT THE MAIN STREET CHILDREN'S MUSEUM TO PROVIDING TEACHER RESOURCES AT THE HISTORICAL CENTER OF YORK COUNTY.

IN FYE 2020, THE CHM SERVED 44,410 THROUGH BOTH ONSITE AND OUTREACH EFFORTS. HISTORIC BRATTONSVILLE, MAIN STREET CHILDREN'S MUSEUM AND THE MUSEUM OF YORK COUNTY SAW 27,364 IN GENERAL ADMISSION. SCHOOL GROUP VISITATION EQUALED 11,330 AT THESE THREE SITES. THE MCCELVEY CENTER SERVED 2,371 VISITORS WITH GENEALOGICAL RESEARCH, OUTREACH AND PARTICIPATION IN EVENTS. ANOTHER 962 GUESTS ENJOYED THE SOUTHERN SOUND SERIES CONCERTS. PLEASE NOTE: THE CULTURE & HERITAGE CLOSED TO THE PUBLIC IN MARCH 2020, TO HELP COMBAT THE SPREAD OF COVID-19. THE CLOSING SIGNIFICANTLY AFFECTED EVERY ASPECT OF THE ORGANIZATION'S PERFORMANCE INCLUDING VISITATION, MEMBERSHIP, SCHOOL PROGRAMMING, COMMUNITY OUTREACH, AND LARGE, SPECIAL EVENTS.
THE CHM SERVES THE BROADER COMMUNITY THROUGH DAILY EXPERIENCES AT OUR SITES - HISTORIC BRATTONSVILLE, THE MCCELVEY CENTER, THE MUSEUM OF YORK COUNTY AND MAIN STREET CHILDREN'S MUSEUM. FROM TOURS, SPECIAL EVENTS, CONCERTS, PLANETARIUM PROGRAMS, BIRTHDAY PARTIES, RESEARCH OPPORTUNITIES AND MORE, WE SEEK TO PROVIDE A RICH AND MEANINGFUL EXPERIENCE CENTERED ON THE CAROLINA PIEDMONT. IN FYE 2020, CHM CONTINUED TO MOVE FORWARD WITH THE IMPLEMENTATION OF ITS INSTITUTIONAL PLAN.AT HISTORIC BRATTONSVILLE, THIS INCLUDED THE COMPLETION OF PRESERVATION WORK ON TWO ORIGINAL OUTBUILDINGS ASSOCIATED WITH THE ENSLAVED ON THE PLANTATION AND DESIGN WORK FOR THE PRESERVATION AND RESTORATION OF TWO OF THE THREE PRIMARY BRATTON RESIDENCES STILL EXISTING ON THE PROPERTY. CONSTRUCTION WORK WAS COMPLETED ON THE BRATTON BRICK HOUSE, THE THIRD PRIMARY BRATTON RESIDENCE. AT THE MUSEUM OF YORK COUNTY, CONSTRUCTION WAS COMPLETED ON ITS NEW MAJOR PERMANENT EXHIBIT DEPICTING THE ICE AGE IN THE CAROLINA PIEDMONT. THE EXHIBIT WAS PROJECTED TO OPEN IN THE SUMMER OF 2020; HOWEVER, THE OPENING WAS POSTPONED DUE TO THE IMPACTS OF COVID-19. THESE CAPITAL IMPROVEMENTS WERE PRIMARILY FUNDED BY GRANTS. A SIGNIFICANT PORTION OF A MAJOR PROJECT TO REPAIR AND RESTORE ALL OF THE WINDOWS AT THE MCCELVEY CENTER WAS COMPLETED IN FY 2020.
