GLOW STRIVES TO BE THE COUNTRY'S MOST INNOVATIVE LEADER IN THE FUSION OF OPERA, OPERETTA AND MUSICAL THEATRE. GLOW SEEKS TO PRODUCE NATIONALLY RECOGNIZED WORK THAT IS SOCIALLY RELEVANT, AND SERVE AS A UNIQUE EXAMPLE OF UTILIZING THEATRE FOR SOCIAL CHANGE.
GLOW LYRIC THEATRE IS SOUTH CAROLINA'S ONLY PROFESSIONAL LYRIC THEATRE THAT PRODUCES OPERA, OPERETTA AND MUSICAL THEATRE THAT IS IN RESPONSE TO THE SOCIAL AND POLITICAL CLIMATE OF THE REGION.
GLOW'S 8TH YEAR WAS ITS BIGGEST TO DATE IN BOTH NUMBER OF AUDIENCE SERVED (OVER 3,000) AS WELL AS REVENUE. THE SUMMER FESTIVAL SEASON FEATURED SOUTH CAROLINA'S FIRST PRODUCTION OF LIN-MANUEL MIRANDA'S IN THE HEIGHTS AS WELL AS GROUND BREAKING PRODUCTIONS BEETHOVEN'S ONLY OPERA FIDELIO AND GILBERT & SULLIVAN'S HMS PINAFORE. IN THE HEIGHTS WAS ONE OF THE BEST EXAMPLES OF OUR COMMITMENT TO OUR VALUES OF ADVOCACY AND INCLUSIVITY. IT WAS THE FIRST SHOW TO BE PRODUCED IN THE UPSTATE WITH HISPANIC CULTURE AND LANGUAGE AT THE FOREFRONT, WITH A CAST ENTIRELY OF PEOPLE OF COLOR. GLOW PARTNERED WITH ORGANIZATIONS LIKE THE HISPANIC ALLIANCE AND MOSAIC TO HELP CONNECT AUDIENCE MEMBERS TO WAYS TO SUPPORT THE UPSTATE'S VIBRANT HISPANIC COMMUNITY. FIDELIO FEATURED A STRONG FEMALE HEROINE, THAT TURNED THE FUNDAMENTAL IDEA OF THE MALE-SAVIOR TROPE ON ITS HEAD, AS WELL AS CONFRONTING THE VERY REAL AND CONTINUING THREATS OF TOTALITARIANISM AND TOXIC MASCULINITY IN MODERN SOCIETY. DURING THE FESTIVAL SEASON RUN OVER 20% PERCENT OF OUR AUDIENCE MEMBERS WERE OF HISPANIC DESCENT, AND WE WERE AT 100% AUDIENCE CAPACITY FOR ALL 10 PERFORMANCES. THIS WAS THE FIRST TIME THAT OUR ORGANIZATIONAL PARTNER WAS ALSO INTIMATELY INVOLVED IN THE PLANNING AND IMPLEMENTATION OF OUR PRE-SHOW ACTIVITIES OF FOOD AND MUSIC ENTERTAINMENT, WHICH BROUGHT OUR PARTICIPANTS TOGETHER IN A COMMUNAL EXPERIENCE ABOVE AND BEYOND THEIR AUDIENCE PARTICIPATION. WE ALSO RECEIVED OVER 45 LETTERS FROM THE STUDENTS OF MOSAIC ARTS CAMP AND BRIDGES TO A BRIGHTER FUTURE IN RESPONSE TO THE PRODUCTION. FOR THE FIRST TIME, WE INCLUDED TALK BACKS AND ON-SITE VISITS WITH THE YOUTH OF THESE ORGANIZATIONS, EXPANDING OUR OUTREACH INITIATIVES. GLOW'S RAISING VOICES SERIES PRODUCTION OF ARMED WAS A DEVISED PIECE FEATURING OPERA, MUSICAL THEATRE, MONOLOGUES AND POETRY TACKLING GUN VIOLENCE IN AMERICA FROM A NUANCED PERSPECTIVE. REHEARSALS BEGAN ONLY TWO DAYS BEFORE THE STONEMAN DOUGLAS HIGH SCHOOL SHOOTING. GLOW'S PRODUCTION OF ARMED BECAME A LAUNCHING POINT FOR MANY OF SC'S LARGEST GUN VIOLENCE PREVENTION ORGANIZATIONS TO COME TOGETHER AND USE THE POWER OF THEATRE TO DISCUSS THIS CONTROVERSIAL TOPIC. COMMUNITY PARTNERS INCLUDED SAFE HARBOR, MOMS DEMAND ACTION, ARM IN ARM AND MARCH FOR OUR LIVES GREENVILLE. THESE ORIGINAL PRODUCTIONS WERE SOLD OUT FOR THE ENTIRE RUN.
