Organizations Filed Purposes: THE MISSION OF THE SPARTANBURG HUMANE SOCIETY IS TO PROVIDE QUALITY CARE TO LOST AND UNWANTED PETS WHILE RAISING COMMUNITY AWARENESS ABOUT ISSUES AFFECTING COMPANION ANIMALS.

THE MISSION OF THE SPARTANBURG HUMANE SOCIETY IS TO PROVIDE QUALITY CARE TO LOST AND UNWANTED PETS WHILE RAISING COMMUNITY AWARENESS ABOUT ISSUES AFFECTING COMPANION ANIMALS. TO FULFULL THIS MISSION WE ENSURE THAT EVERY ANIMAL THAT LEAVES OUR BUILDING EITHER GOING INTO A HOME, A RESCUE GROUP, OR INTO A SANCTUARY HOME, IS SPAYED OR NEUTERED, IS FULLY VACCINATED AND MICROCHIPPED. WE VACCINATE EVERY SINGLE ANIMAL THAT ENTERS OUR DOORS WITH A MINIMUM OF 2 VACCINES. MANY RECEIVE MORE VACCINES DEPENDING ON THE AGE THAT THEY ARE WHEN THEY ENTER THE BUILDING. OF THE NEARLY 5,700 ANIMALS THAT WE ARE ABLE TO FIND HOMES FOR EACH YEAR, ALMOST 80% OF THESE ARE NOT SPAYED/NEUTERED AND MUST BE BEFORE LEAVING. BETWEEN OUTSOURCING OUR SPAY/NEUTER SURGERIES TO ANOTHER FACILITY AND PERFORMING THE MORE CHALLENGING SURGERIES HERE AT THE SPARTANBURG HUMANE SOCIETY, WE SPAY OR NEUTER NEARLY 3,700 ANIMALS EACH YEAR. OUR CLINIC VACCINATES NEARLY 10,000 ANIMALS EACH YEAR AND MICROCHIPS 3,500 EVERY YEAR.

THE SPARTANBURG COMMUNITY CONTINUES TO PRODUCE THOUSANDS OF UNWANTED ANIMALS EVERY YEAR. AS THE ONLY OPEN ADMISSION SHELTER IN THE COUNTY, THE SHS PROVIDES INTAKE FOR THE IMMEDIATE NEEDS OF DISPLACED ANIMALS AND OFFERS A SECOND CHANCE FOR PETS THAT CAN NO LONGER STAY IN THEIR HOMES. OVER 7,000 ANIMALS HOUSED. THROUGH OUR AGGRESSIVE ADOPTION PROGRAM AND INCREASING EVENTS WHERE WE CAN SHOWCASE OUR AVAILABLE ANIMALS WE ARE ABLE TO FIND MORE HOMES FOR ANIMALS THAN EVER BEFORE. OUR LIVE RELEASE RATE HAS DONE AN ABOUT FACE. WE ARE NOW RELEASING ANIMALS THROUGH ADOPTION AND RESCUE OBTAINING HOMES FOR 80% TO 90% OF OUR ANIMALS. FOR 2020 OUR LIVE RELEASE RATE IS NOW 99% FOR THE ENTIRE YEAR. PREVIOUSLY EUTHANIZED HEARTWORM POSITIVE ANIMALS ARE NOW BEING TREATED MEDICALLY AND ADOPTED INTO HOMES. WE ARE TREATING UP TO 15 ANIMALS WEEKLY FOR HEARTWORM DISEASE. HEARTWORM PREVENTATIVE MEDICATIONS ARE ABOUT 30% LESS AND WE OFFER A REDUCED RATE FOR OUR LOW INCOME CLIENTS. HEARTWORM PREVENTATIVE IS CRITICAL FOR ANIMALS IN THE SOUTH WITH SUCH A HIGH MOSQUITO POPULATION. WE ARE EDUCATING OUR ADOPTERS AS TO THE IMPORTANCE OF HEARTWORM PREVENTATIVE. EVERY SINGLE DAY WE CARE FOR WELL OVER 500 ANIMALS UNDER OUR ONE SINGLE ROOF AND DURING THE HEIGHT OF INTAKE SEASON, WE OFTEN HOUSE NEARLY 600 ANIMALS IN OUR CARE. WITH AN INTEGRATED MARKETING PROGRAM COUPLED WITH OUR OPEN ADOPTION PROGRAM WE ARE ABLE TO REDUCE OUR LENGTH OF STAY FROM 59 DAYS TO JUST UNDER 48 DAYS TOPPING OUR SET GOAL OF 20% TO 24%. THE SPARTANBURG HUMANE SOCIETY WORKS WITH LOCAL, REGIONAL AND NATIONAL RESCUE GROUPS, WHICH WE REFER TO AS PLACEMENT PARTNERS. OUR GOAL IS TO IDENTIFY ANIMALS WHO COMPLEMENT PARTNER RESOURCES.

EDUCATING OUR COMMUNITY ABOUT HOMELESS ANIMALS, SOLUTIONS TO PET OVERPOPULATION, COMPASSIONATE AND RESPONSIBLE PET CARE IS AN IMPORTANT PART OF OUR CORE MISSION AT THE SHS. PROGRAMS ARE HELD AT THE HUMANE SOCIETY, IN CLASSROOMS, LIBRARIES, COMMUNITY CENTERS, AND OUTDOOR EVENTS AND FESTIVALS THROUGHOUT THE COUNTY. THROUGH OUR EDUCATION PROGRAM, ADOPTION EVENTS, AND OUR VETERINARY CLINIC, WE REACH WELL OVER 40,000 PEOPLE EACH YEAR. DUE TO THE EFFECTS OF COVID ON OUR ABILITY TO MAKE IN- CLASSROOM VISITS, THE NUMBER OF IN-PERSON VISITS HAS DROPPED DRAMATICALLY. HOWEVER, WE ARE ABLE TO CONTINUE MANY CLASSROOM VISTS THROUGH ZOOM REACHING MANY STUDENTS WITH VARIOUS LESSONS IN HUMANE EDUCATION.
