Organizations Filed Purposes: The International Society for Heart and Lung Transplantation (ISHLT) is a not-for-profit organization dedicated to the advancement of the science and treatment of end-stage heart and lung diseases. ISHLT was created in 1981 at a small gathering of about 15 cardiologists and cardiac surgeons. Today we have over nearly 3000 members from over 50 countries, representing over 23 different disciplines involved in the management and treatment of end-stage heart and lung disease. This multinational, multidisciplinary mix is one of the biggest strengths of the Society. It brings greater breadth and depth to our educational offerings and provides an exceptional environment for networking and exchanging information on an informal basis. Our members include anesthesiologists, basic scientists, cardiologists, cardiothoracic surgeons, ethicists, immunologists, nurses, pathologists, perfusionists, pharmacists, pulmonologists, tissue engineers, and transplant coordinators. The International Society for Heart and Lung Transplantation (ISHLT) is a not-for-profit multidisciplinary professional organization dedicated to improving the care of patients with advance heart or lung disease through transplantation, mechanical support and innovative therapies via research, education and advocacy.

ISHLTs educational activities include an annual scientific meeting incorporating peer reviewed cutting edge research and expert lectures; pre-meeting core competency courses, master classes, and post-graduate seminars; online educational webinars; and collaborative educational activities with a variety of international medical societies.

ISHLTs research activities include grants and awards for research and career development and maintenance of two data registries. ISHLT awards annual grants to support research training in heart and lung transplantation as well as end-stage heart and lung diseases so as to encourage the development of clinical or basic science research implications. The ISHLT Registry for Mechanically Assisted Circulatory Support (IMACS) is an international registry intended to enroll and follow patients who receive durable mechanically assisted circulatory support devices (MCSD) in all countries and hospitals that wish to participate. The International Thoracic Organ Transplant (TTX) Registry was created to provide on-going, current data regarding patient, donor, and transplant characteristics as well as post-transplant outcomes. Our Registry is the only one of its kind. All institutions and countries performing heart, heart-lung, and/or lung transplantation are invited to submit data to the TTX Registry.

ISHLTs publications include The Journal of Heart and Lung Transplantation (JHLT), the ISHLT Monograph series. And Professional Practice Standards and Guidelines.JHLT, the official publication of the International Society for Heart and Lung Transplantation, brings readers cutting-edge clinical practice, basic and translational science in the fields of cardio-pulmonary transplantation, mechanical and biological support of the failing heart, advanced lung disease, pulmonary vascular disease (pulmonary arterial hypertension and CTEPH), extracorporeal support of donor organs, and cell replacement therapy. The ISHLT Monograph Series is an annual hardcover publication of the Society that provides in-depth coverage of the current state of knowledge of a specific topic relevant to heart and lung transplantation and/or end stage heart and lung disease. As part of its mission, ISHLT engages in the regular development of Professional Practice Guidelines and Consensus Statements, Health Policy Guidance Statements, Standards Statements, and Public Comments regarding professional practice matters and the care of patients with advanced heart and/or lung disease.
