The mission of Hope Springs Water is to provide sources of pure water, provide water distributions systems, sanitation systems, and or public health educations programs in the developing world.
The WaSH (water access, sanitation, and hygiene education) zone that Hope Springs Water is currently actively involved in is in the Southwest Shewa Zone of the state of Oromia, centrally located in the east African country of Ethiopia. This past year has brought many exciting changes to our work in that region. Hope Springs Water has helped to form an Ethiopian national NGO (non-governmental organization, or nonprofit organization) with a home office in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. There are five national employees who run the office; handle governmental affairs and agreements/permissions; organize, plan, and monitor our projects; and help plan and execute all logistical requirements for the five or six teams that travel there during the dry season every year to drill water wells, work on sanitation projects, teach hygiene education in the schools, and provide the Hope for Girls menstrual management program and materials to girls to help them stay in school following menarche. We were blessed to be able to drill five wells in 2020 throughout the Illuu and Tollee Waredas. The five functional wells provide water for between 1500 and 2000 people who live in those rural villages. In 2020 Hope Springs Water added our newest W.A.S.H. (water, sanitation, hygiene) zone in Bungoma County, Kenya, where the initial water wells are planned to help widows and orphans. In September we drilled our first deep water well near the Myanga village orphanage and was drilled at 80 meters and equipped with an electric pump and controls that will provide water for the orphanage and the surrounding village of 6,000 people. Hope Springs Water also helped orphans in the Bungoma area with their health care needs by sponsoring antimalarial and typhoid vaccinations. These together reduced the number of hospitalized children by 85%.
Despite the worldwide COVID-19 pandemic, Hope for Girls program distributed 774 menstrual hygiene management kits to girls in Belize and Mexico in 2020. With a great focus on fundraising, we were able to increase the program's income. In preparation for future distributions, 5,000 tote bags, 6 bolts of PUL fabric, and 4,000 menstrual cups were purchased for the assembly of the MHM kits to be distributed in 2021-2022. Belize had a successful trip in January 2020.
In 2020, we were able to use funds for relief efforts for Hurricanes that hit the US as well as storms that hit Nicaragua. Hurricane Laura hit in August of 2020. We were able to send water and supplies because of relief funds Hope Springs Water has raised. Towards the end of 2020, Hope Springs Water helped in relief efforts along the Nicaraguan coast. We are hopeful to continue to raise funds for relief efforts each year.
