AUSTIN SAMARITANS SEEKS TO SHOW GOD'S LOVE TO PEOPLE IN NEED IN NICARAGUA BY SERVING AND ASSISTING.

AMOS HEALTH AND HOPE RUNS THE MINISTRY CLINICA MEDICA IN VILLA GUADALUPE IN MANAGUA, NICARAGUA. THE CLINIC PROVIDES GENERAL MEDICAL CARE, OBSTETRICS/GYNECOLOGY, ULTRASOUND SCANS, AND LABORATORY SERVICES. PATIENTS PAY NOMINAL FEES FOR SERVICES. FOR EXAMPLE, THE COST OF A DOCTOR VISIT IS THE EQUIVALENT OF 80 CENTS. IN RESPONSE TO THE PANDEMIC, CLINICA MEDICA CEASED HOSTING MEDICAL DELEGATIONS AND MISSION TEAMS AND IMPLEMENTED THE GUIDELINES FROM THE CDC AND WHO. IN RESPONSE TO A SURGE IN CASES IN NICARAGUA, IT SUSPENDED OPERATIONS DURING THE LAST TWO WEEKS IN JUNE BUT CONTINUED TO PROVIDE TELEMEDICINE CONSULTATIONS VIA PHONE. CLINIC OPERATIONS WERE RESTORED ON JULY 1. IN AUGUST THE CLINIC CLOSED OPERATIONS FOR 2 WEEKS BECAUSE OF SUSPECTED COVID-19 AMONG THE STAFF BUT WAS ABLE TO REOPEN THE FIRST OF SEPTEMBER AND HAS REMAINED OPEN SINCE THEN. EVEN WITH THE HECTIC YEAR THE CLINIC SAW 830 NEW PATIENTS WITH 2807 COMPLETED CONSULTATIONS. THE CLINIC HAD 721 DOCTOR VISITS FOR CHILDREN UNDER 5, 810 TOTAL GYNECOLOGICAL SERVICES AND 387 CONSULTATIONS WITH CHRONICALLY ILL PATIENTS.

AUSTIN SAMARITANS SUPPORTS 3 ADDITIONAL PROGRAMS. THE FIRST IS VILLA ESPERANZA. VILLA ESPERANZA IS A RESIDENCY PROGRAM FOR GIRLS AT RISK OF PHYSICAL AND/OR SEXUAL ABUSE. IN ADDITION TO SHELTER, THE GIRLS RECEIVE EDUCATIONAL SUPPORT, HEALTH CARE, BIBLE STUDY AND TRAINING IN VOCATIONAL AND LIFE SKILLS. WHILE THE GIRLS LIVE IN A PROTECTED RESIDENCY, THEY MAINTAIN REGULAR CONTACT WITH THEIR FAMILIES. THE PROGRAM HAS EXPANDED FROM ITS ORIGINAL MISSION AND IS OFFERING A PROGRAM TO NEIGHBORHOOD BOYS ON THE WEEKEND. IN RESPONSE TO THE PANDEMIC, THE STAFF AT VILLA ESPERANZA HANDED OUT FOOD PACKS TO PEOPLE IN THE SURROUNDING COMMUNITY. THE NEXT PROGRAM IS CLUB CRISTIANO LA ESPERANZA. CLUB ESPERANZA OFFERS CLASSES FROM PRE-KINDERGARTEN THROUGH 4TH GRADE AND TUTORING FOR STUDENTS IN HIGHER GRADES THAT LIVE IN THE BARRIO VILLA GUADALUPE. IT ALSO OFFERS A FEEDING PROGRAM FOR THE STUDENTS. AS THE PANDEMIC SPREAD IN MANAGUA, MANY OF THE STAFF CONTRACTED THE DISEASE FORCING THE SCHOOL TO CUT BACK ITS PROGRAMS. IT BEGAN ONLINE TEACHING WHICH PROVED DIFFICULT BECAUSE IT WAS HARD FOR THE STUDENTS TO ACCESS THE REQUIRED TECHNOLOGY. IN LATE SUMMER, SOME STUDENTS ONCE AGAIN BEGAN ATTENDING IN-PERSON CLASSES. THE SCHOOL BEGAN OFFERING ALL CLASSES IN-PERSON IN OCTOBER.AMOS HEALTH AND HOPE RUNS A CLINIC AT DISPENSARIO EL SAMARITANO IN A COMMUNITY NEAR MANAGUA CALLED NEJAPA. AS PART OF THAT CLINIC AUSTIN SAMARITANS SUPPORTS A DENTAL CLINIC. THE DENTAL CLINIC SERVES DISADVANTAGE RESIDENTS. THE CLINIC ADDED 312 NEW PATIENTS IN 2020 FOR A TOTAL OF 599 PATIENTS. IN 2020 IT HAD 196 PATIENT CONSULTATIONS AND DID 294 INDIVIDUAL DENTAL PROCEDURES. LIKE OTHER PROGRAMS IN MANAGUA THE DENTAL CLINICS SERVICES WERE DISRUPTED FOR PART OF 2020 BECAUSE OF THE PANDEMIC.

COLEGIO CHRISTIANO PRESBITERIANO (CCP), A MISSION OF THE PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH OF SOUTH KOREA IN NICARAGUA, PROVIDES EDUCATION FOR CHILDREN FROM PRE-KINDERGARTEN THROUGH 11TH GRADE. THE STUDENTS COME FROM THE BARRIO HIALEAH, A NEIGHBORHOOD OF FAMILIES WITH VERY LOW INCOMES. THE SCHOOL OFFERS A BETTER EDUCATION THAN THAT PROVIDED BY THE NICARAGUAN PUBLIC SCHOOLS. EVEN WITH THE PANDEMIC THE SCHOOL SERVICED OVER 325 STUDENTS THIS YEAR. AS A RESULT OF THE PANDEMIC, IN MID-MARCH THE SCHOOL BEGAN USING TAKE-HOME PACKETS TO PROVIDE EDUCATION RATHER THAN FACE-TO-FACE CLASSES. AT THE END OF JULY, THE SCHOOL BEGAN IN-PERSON CLASSES. CURRENTLY 80% OF THE STUDENTS IN THE SECOND GRADE AND HIGHER PARTICIPATE IN FACE-TO-FACE CLASSES. APPROXIMATELY HALF OF THE PRE-SCHOOL AND 1ST GRADE STUDENTS ARE IN CLASSES. THOSE STUDENTS THAT ARE NOT ATTENDING IN-PERSON CLASSES ARE BEING INDIVIDUALLY TAUGHT BY TEACHERS BY TELEPHONE OR ONLINE.
