Organizations Filed Purposes: AUSTIN VOICES FOR EDUCATION AND YOUTH CREATES COMMUNITY COLLABORATION TO STRENGTHEN FAMILIES, SUPPORT KIDS AND IMPROVE SCHOOLS. WE BELIEVE OUR PUBLIC SCHOOLS CAN SERVE AS POWERFUL HUBS FOR BRINGING NEIGHBORHOODS, FAMILIES AND STUDENTS TOGETHER TO ACHIEVE POSITIVE CHANGE.

TO IMPROVE EDUCATIONAL OPPORTUNITIES FOR YOUNG PEOPLE

YOUTH LEADERSHIP AFTERSCHOOL PROGRAMS: AUSTIN VOICES PROVIDES SUPPORT TO TEAMS OF STUDENT LEADERS, CALLED STAND UP! CHAPTERS. THESE STUDENT LEADERS WORK ALONGSIDE ADULTS IN THEIR SCHOOLS AND COMMUNITIES TO REDUCE BARRIERS TO GRADUATION AND IMPROVE CAMPUS CLIMATE. THROUGH THESE STAND UP! CLUBS, STUDENTS CREATE AND WORK ON THE IMPLEMENTATION OF THEIR SCHOOL IMPROVEMENT CAMPAIGNS BY MEETING WEEKLY TO IDENTIFY ISSUES ON THEIR COMPUSES, COLLECT DATA ON THESE ISSUES, ANALYZE THE DATAT, AND LAUNCH CAMPAIGNS TO ENACT POSITIVE CHANGE CONCERNING THE ISSUE(S). THE STUDENTS WORK WITH PRINCIPALS, FACULTY, CAMPUS ADVISORY COUNCILS, AND COMMUNITY MEMBERS TO FIND INNOVATIVE SOLUTIONS TO CAMPUS CHALLENGES. AUSTIN VOICES SUPPORTS STUDENTS IN THIS WORK BY PROVIDING TRAININGS, MENTORING, AND SUPPORT. RECENT ACTIVITIES HAVE INCLUDED SPONSORING SCHOOL BOARD CANDIDATE FORUMS, JOINING TO FIGHT SCHOOL CLOSURE IN THE STATE, DEVELOPING INITIATIVES TO IMPROVE ATTENDANCE, AND REDUCING DROPOUT RATES.

COMMUNITY CONVERSATIONS/SCHOOL IMPROVEMENT: AVEY WORKS WITH COMMUNITY STAKEHOLDERS, INCLUDING STUDENTS, TEACHERS/STAFF, PARENTS AND COMMUNITY MEMBERS TO SUPPORT GREAT EDUCATION FOR ALL CHILDREN. THE "COMMUNITY SCHOOL" MODEL SEES SCHOOLS AS BOTH A KEY HUB IN THE COMMUNITY AND A NETWORK OF PARTNERSHIPS BETWEEN THE SCHOOL AND COMMUNITY RESOURCES. AVEY HAS SEEN THE SUCCESS OF THIS MODEL IMPROVING ACADEMIC OUTCOMES FOR YOUTH. BOTH REAGAN HIGH SCHOOL AND WEBB MIDDLE SCHOOL, WHICH HAVE EMBRACED ELEMENTS OF THE COMMUNITY SCHOOL MODEL, HAVE BEEN SIGNIFICANT TURNAROUNDS OVER THE PAST EIGHT YEARS. DURING THE PAST YEAR, AVEY CONTINUED ITS COMMUNITY COVERSATIONS FOCUSED ON SCHOOL IMPROVEMENT AT THE FOLLOWING SCHOOLS: REAGAN, EASTSIDE MEMORIAL, AND LANIER HIGH SCHOOLS, MARTIN, WEBB, AND BURNET MIDDLE SCHOOLS, AND GOVALLE, ORTEGA, COOK AND WOOLDRIDGE ELEMENTARY SCHOOLS.

FAMILY RESOURCE CENTERS: THE FIRST FAMILY RESOURCE CENTER WAS FOUNDED IN 2007 TO PROVIDE A SCHOOL-BASED CENTER TO OFFER PROFESSIONAL WRAPAROUND SERVICES TO FAMILIES IN CRISIS. CURRENTLY, AVEY HAS FOUR FAMILY RESOURCE CENTERS (BURNET, DOBIE, AND WEB MIDDLE SCHOOLS AND LANIER HIGH SCHOOL) AND SUPPORTS TWO OTHERS (REAGAN AND LBJ HIGH SCHOOLS). THE FRCS ARE A "ONE-STOP SHOP" FOR FAMILIES FACING THE CHALLENGES OF POVERTY, OFFERING THE EMPLOYMENT, HOUSING, HEALTH, COUNSELING, AND BASIC NEEDS ASSISTANCE, WITH THE GOAL OF FAMILY STABILITY AND SUCCESS. AVEY'S FRCS HAVE, OVER THE PAST TEN YEARS HELPED CAMPUSES IMPROVE ATTENDANCE AND ACADEMIC PERFORMANCE BY HELPING STUDENTS FOCUS ON NEEDS AT SCHOOL RATHER THAN AT HOME. AVEY ALSO OPERATES AN ADULT ACADEMY AT WEBB MIDDLE SCHOOL AND IS ESTABLISHING THEM AT THREE OTHER CAMPUSES. PARENTS ARE ABLE TO TAKE CLASSES, BOTH DURING THE DAY AND IN THE EVENING, TO IMPROVE THEIR SKILLS FOR EMPLOYMENT AND PARENTING. "THE RIGHT QUESTION PROJECT" IS A SIGANTURE OF AVEY'S PARENT LEADERSHIP PROGRAMSTHAT HELPS PARENTS SUPPORT, MONITOR, AND ADVOCATE FOR THEIR CHILD(REN) IN SCHOOL.
