TO PROMOTE AUSTIN'S DIVERSE CULTURAL HERITAGE THROUGH THE PRESERVATION OF HISTORIC PLACES
PRESERVATION AUSTIN HAS BEEN OUR CITY'S LEADING NONPROFIT VOICE FOR HISTORIC PRESERVATION SINCE 1953, WITH A MISSION TO PROMOTE AUSTIN'S DIVERSE CULTURAL HERITAGE THROUGH THE PRESERVATION OF HISTORIC PLACES. OUR ORGANIZATION FULFILLS THIS MISSION THROUGH REGULAR EDUCATIONAL PROGRAMMING AND ADVOCACY EFFORTS THAT ENCOURAGE REINVESTMENT IN OUR CITY'S HISTORIC RESOURCES. ANNUAL PROGRAMMING CULTIVATES COMMUNITY SUPPORT FOR PRESERVING AUSTIN'S HISTORIC LANDMARKS, NEIGHBORHOODS, CULTURAL LANDSCAPES, AND LEGACY BUSINESSES. OUR SPRING HOMES TOUR SHOWCASES 21ST CENTURY LIVING IN HISTORIC SPACES; THE PRESERVATION MERIT AWARDS PROGRAM CELEBRATES THE ADVOCATES SAVING, RESTORING, AND INTERPRETING OUR CITY'S HERITAGE; GREENING YOUR VINTAGE HOME WORKSHOPS EXPLORE THE INTERSECTION OF PRESERVATION AND SUSTAINABILITY; JUGGING AND JAWING HISTORIC AUSTIN HAPPY HOURS CELEBRATING ICONIC WATERING HOLES; AND MORE.
ADVOCACY FOCUSES ON EDUCATING OUR COMMUNITY ABOUT POLICY ISSUES WITH BROAD IMPLICATIONS FOR HISTORIC RESOURCES AT EVERY LEVEL OF GOVERNMENT. THIS INCLUDES SUPPORTING PUBLIC FUNDING FOR HISTORIC RESOURCE SURVEYS AND HERITAGE GRANTS; PROVIDING TECHNICAL SUPPORT TO INDIVIDUALS AND NEIGHBORHOODS PURSUING HISTORIC ZONING; SITE-SPECIFIC ADVOCACY TO ENCOURAGE PRESERVATION OF THREATENED BUILDINGS; AND MORE. STAFF AND BOARD REGULARLY PARTICIPATE IN COMMUNITY-FOCUSED ADVOCACY EFFORTS CELEBRATING OUR COMMUNITY'S DIVERSE HERITAGE.
PRESERVATION AUSTIN OFFERS MATCHING GRANTS OF UP TO $5,000 IN THREE CATEGORIES: EDUCATION, BRICKS AND MORTAR, AND PLANNING/HISTORIC RESOURCE SURVEY/LOCAL HISTORIC DESIGNATION. NONPROFIT ORGANIZATIONS, NEIGHBORHOOD ORGANIZATIONS, PUBLIC ENTITIES, AND OWNERS OF INDIVIDUAL OR PROPOSED LANDMARKS MAY APPLY. BY PROVIDING SMALL BUT IMPACTFUL FUNDING TO IMPORTANT PROJECTS CITYWIDE, WE SUPPORT THE PRESERVATION AND INTERPRETATION OF HISTORIC PLACES THAT MEAN THE MOST TO OUR COMMUNITY.
