THE MISSION OF TEXAS 4000 IS TO CULTIVATE STUDENT LEADERS AND ENGAGE COMMUNITIES IN THE FIGHT AGAINST CANCER. WE SHARE HOPE, KNOWLEDGE AND CHARITY THROUGH LEADERSHIP DEVELOPMENT, GRANT-MAKING, AND OUR CORNERSTONE EVENT, A 4,000+ MILE 70-DAY BIKE RIDE FROM AUSTIN TO ANCHORAGE EACH SUMMER - THE LONGEST ANNUAL CHARITY BIKE RIDE IN THE WORLD.
LEADERSHIP DEVELOPMENT, SUMMER RIDE & COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT PROGRAM - EVERY YEAR TEXAS 4000 COMPETITIVELY SELECTS UNIVERSITY OF TEXAS STUDENTS FOR AN 18-MONTH PROGRAM DESIGNED TO CULTIVATE THE NEXT GENERATION TO LEAD THE FIGHT AGAINST CANCER. THE TEXAS 4000 PROGRAM INCLUDES A COMPREHENSIVE CURRICULUM BASED AROUND OUR EIGHT FOUNDATIONAL SKILLS - SELF AWARENESS, COMMUNICATION, RESILIENCY, EFFICIENT PLANNING, PEER RESPECT, SITUATIONAL LEADERSHIP, TECHNICAL KNOWLEDGE & SKILLS, AND VISION & ACTION. TEXAS 4000 EMPOWERS EACH STUDENT TO RAISE $4,500, RIDE 2,000 TRAINING MILES WITH HIS/HER TEAM, VOLUNTEER MORE THAN 50 HOURS IN THE COMMUNITY, AND PLAY AN ACTIVE ROLE IN PLANNING EVERY ASPECT OF THE RIDE TO ALASKA BY ATTENDING WEEKLY MEETINGS AND TAKING LEADERSHIP POSITIONS WITHIN THE TEAM.THROUGHOUT THE SUMMER RIDE, THE STUDENTS SHARE MESSAGES OF CANCER PREVENTION AND EARLY DETECTION THROUGH EDUCATIONAL PROGRAMS GIVEN IN MANY OF THE TOWNS THEY RIDE THROUGH. THERE WERE 80+ STUDENTS IN THE 2019 SUMMER RIDE. SINCE ITS INCEPTION, TEXAS 4000 FOR CANCER HAS CULTIVATED MORE THAN 875 COLLEGE STUDENTS AS PART OF THE ORGANIZATION'S LEADERSHIP DEVELOPMENT PROGRAM.EACH YEAR, TEXAS 4000 ALSO HOSTS SEVERAL EVENTS TO ENGAGE THE COMMUNITY IN THE FIGHT AGAINST CANCER - PREDOMINANTLY, THE ATLAS RIDE AND TRIBUTE GALA. THE ATLAS RIDE IS THE FIRST DAY OF THE TEXAS 4000 TEAM'S RIDE TO ANCHORAGE, WHERE MORE THAN 500 CYCLISTS FROM THE COMMUNITY JOIN THE TEXAS 4000 TEAM. IN ADDITION TO STARTING THE TEAM'S 70-DAY JOURNEY, ATLAS REPRESENTS AN OPPORTUNITY TO BEGIN CONVEYING THE EDUCATIONAL MISSION OF CANCER PREVENTION TO HUNDREDS OF PEOPLE, AS WELL AS, FUNDRAISING. THE TRIBUTE GALA IS AN ANNUAL EVENT HELD TO CELEBRATE THE RIDERS, HOME FROM THEIR JOURNEY, TO HONOR THEM FOR THEIR ACCOMPLISHMENTS AND WELCOME THE NEXT YEAR'S TEAM. THE EVENT EMPOWERS THE COMMUNITY TO JOIN THE TEXAS 4000 FIGHT AGAINST CANCER.
