THE MISSION OF THE TEXAS HEALTH INSTITUTE IS TO ADVANCE THE HEALTH OF ALL.

TO ENSURE THAT INDIVIDUALS WITH GENETIC DISORDERS AND THEIR FAMILIES HAVE ACCESS TO QUALITY CARE AND APPROPRIATE GENETIC EXPERTISE AND INFORMATION THROUGH FACILITATING A PROFESSIONAL NETWORK OF GENETICS CLINICS, KEY PRIMARY CARE PRACTICES, CONSUMER ADVOCATES, AND STATE HEALTH DEPARTMENT RESOURCES.THE MSRGN IS ONE OF SEVEN REGIONAL NETWORKS FUNDED THROUGH THE HEALTHCARE RESOURCES AND SERVICES ADMINISTRATION (HRSA). THE MSRGN IS FOCUSED ON THE FOLLOWING PRIORITIES: LINKAGE OF MEDICALLY UNDERSERVED POPULATIONS TO GENETIC SERVICES IMPLEMENTATION OF QUALITY IMPROVEMENT ACTIVITIES TO INCREASE GENETIC SERVICES IMPLEMENTATION OF EVIDENCE-BASED INNOVATIVE MODELS OF TELEHEALTH/TELEMEDICINE FOCUSED ON CLINICAL GENETICS PROVISION OF RESOURCES TO PROVIDERS (GENETICS AND PRIMARY CARE), PUBLIC HEALTH PROFESSIONALS, AND INDIVIDUALS WITH GENETICS CONDITIONS AND THEIR FAMILIES.

THI PRODUCES SEVERAL CONVENINGS EACH YEAR:THE SOUTHERN OBESITY SUMMIT (SOS) IS THE LARGEST REGIONAL OBESITY PREVENTION EVENT IN THE UNITED STATES, DRAWING HUNDREDS OF PARTICIPANTS FROM THE 16 SOUTHERN STATES CONSISTING OF ALABAMA, ARKANSAS, FLORIDA, GEORGIA, KENTUCKY, LOUISIANA, MISSISSIPPI, MISSOURI, NEW MEXICO, NORTH CAROLINA, OKLAHOMA, SOUTH CAROLINA, TENNESSEE, TEXAS, VIRGINIA, AND WEST VIRGINIA. TOGETHER THESE STATES JOIN FORCES TO FIGHT OBESITY. WITH A FOCUS ON IMPROVING SYSTEMS TO PROMOTE HEALTHY PEOPLE AND RESILIENT COMMUNITIES, THIS YEAR'S SUMMIT WILL BRING TOGETHER LEADERSHIP FROM ACROSS THE SOUTH TO SHARE, LEARN AND DEVELOP STRATEGIES TO ADDRESS THE OBESITY EPIDEMIC WITH A SYSTEMS LENS. MOREOVER, BECAUSE OBESITY IS A GLOBAL EPIDEMIC DRIVEN BY COMPLEX SYSTEMS THAT SPAN REGIONAL AND NATIONAL BOUNDARIES, SOS INVITES PARTICIPANTS FROM DIVERSE BACKGROUNDS TO SHARE INSIGHTS AND STRATEGIES FOR SYSTEMS CHANGE.500 PARTICIPANTS FROM 16 SOUTHERN STATES CONVENED TO PUBLICIZE EFFECTIVE AND EMERGING OBESITY PREVENTION AND REDUCTION PRACTICES IN THE REGION AND ENERGIZE GRASSROOTS EFFORTS IN EACH STATE.ATTENDEES INCLUDE POLICYMAKERS, LEADERS FROM COMMUNITY-BASED ORGANIZATIONS, FEDERAL AND STATE GOVERNMENT OFFICIALS, HEALTH CARE PROVIDERS, YOUTH AND MEMBERS FROM NATIONAL AND STATE ASSOCIATIONS.SOS IS A GREAT OPPORTUNITY FOR REGIONAL PARTNERING, AND PROVIDES EACH STATE ACCESS TO TECHNICAL ASSISSTANCE THROUGH LEARNING COLLABORATIVES.THE THREE-DAY CONFERENCE OFFERS NETWORKING OPPORTUNITIES, FAST PACED BREAKOUT SESSIONS, WORKGROUP MEETINGS, CROSS-STATE COLLABORATION, BEST PRACTICES, AND YOUTH LEADERSHIP IN OBESITY PREVENTION.OUR FOCUS IS ON STRATEGIES IDENTIFIED AS HAVING THE MOST IMPACT ON OBESITY PREVENTION: EARLY CHILDCARE, FOOD ACCESS, NUTRITION, SCHOOLS, HEALTHCARE, PHYSICAL ACTIVITY, AND WORKSITE WELLNESS.SOS BEGAN WITH SEED CAPITAL FROM THE ROBERT WOOD JOHNSON FONDATION AS A SPINOFF PROJECT OF THE SOUTHERN RURAL ACCESS PROGRAM, A SEVEN-YEAR INITIATIVE TO IMPROVE ACCESS TO CARE. THE SOUTHERN RURAL ACCESS PROGRAM'S NATIONAL ADVISORY COMMITTEE WAS LED BY REGINA BENJAMIN, MD, MBA, AND PREVIOUS SURGEON GENERAL OF THE UNITED STATES. THI AND ARKANSAS CENTER FOR HEALTH IMPROVEMENT (ACHI) PARTNERED FOR THE INAUGURAL SOS IN LITTLE ROCK IN 2007. ADDITIONAL SOS EVENTS HAVE BEEN HELD IN BIRMINGHAM, AL (2008); AUSTIN, TX (2009); ATLANTA, GLA (2010); NEW ORLEANS, LA (2011); CHARLOTTE, NC (2012); NASHVILLE, TN (2013); LOUISVILLE, KY (2014); JACKSON, MS (2015); HOUSTON, TX (2016); AND ATLANTA, GA (2017); CHARLESTON, WV (2018); OKLAHOMA CITY,OK (2019).THE TEXAS PRIMARY CARE AND HEALTH HOME SUMMIT, PRESENTED BY THI AND THE TEXAS MEDICAL HOME INITIATIVE, IS AN ANNUAL STATEWIDE CONFERENCE FOCUSED SPECIFICALLY ON EXPANDING ACCESS TO HIGH QUALITY, PERSON-CENTERED PRIMARY CARE FOR INDIVIDUALS AND FAMILIES IN TEXAS. THE SUMMIT OFFERS STAKEHOLDERS THE OPPORTUNITY TO LEARN ABOUT INNOVATIVE PRIMARY CARE MODELS INCLUDING THE HEALTH HOME. ATTENDEES BECOME CONVERSANT WITH BEST PRACTICES FOR INNOVATION IN PRIMARY CARE AND HAVE MULTIPLE OPPORTUNITIES TO INTERACT WITH PROGRAM EXPERTS AT VARIOUS STAGES OF IMPLEMENTATION.THE GOAL OF THE SUMMIT IS TO PROVIDE OPPORTUNITIES FOR PARTICIPANTS TO HEAR FROM PRACTITIONERS THAT HAVE BEEN SUCCESSFUL IN MAKING TRANSFORMATIONAL CHANGES TO THEIR PRACTICES. EACH YEAR AT THE CJA ANNUAL MEETING AND CONFERECE, TALENTED AND COMMITTED COMMUNITY AND NATIONAL HEALTH LEADERS COME TOGETHER TO SHARE INNOVATIONS, LESSONS-LEARNED, AND INSPIRATION. TOGETHER, THESE FORWARD-THINKING LEADERS DEVELOP AND LEAVE WITH IDEAS, TOOLS, AND ACTION PLANS THAT IMPROVE HEALTH FOR ALL PEOPLE. WE WORK TOGETHER TO APPLY "REAL WORLD" EXPERIENCE IN DEVELOPING COURSES WITH MEASURABLE OUTCOMES THAT ENGAGE THE PRACTITIONER WHEN IT IS CONVENIENT TO THEIR SCHEDULE. THI HELPS CREATE TRAINING THAT IS COMPETENCY-BASED, PRACTICE-FOCUSED, AND ADDRESSES CORE FUNCTIONS AND ESSENTIAL SERVICES. TRAINING IS BASED ON FORMAL NEEDS ASSESSMENTS IN THE FIVE STATE SOUTH CENTRAL REGION.TRANSFORWARD: TEXAS TRANSGENDER HEALTH IS A COLLABORATION BETWEEN THI AND EQUALITY TEXAS FOUNDATION. THE PATIENT-CENTERED OUTCOMES RESEARCH INSTITUTE (PCORI) FUNDED THE CREATION OF A STATEWIDE TRANSGENDER-POWERED RESEARCH LEARNING COLLABORATIVE NETWORK EMPLOYING THE PATIENT-CENTERED OUTCOMES RESEARCH (PCOR) CONCEPTUAL MODEL TO GUIDE AND OPERATIONALIZE THE NETWORK. THIS APPROACH ENABLES TEAMS TO CONDUCT RESEARCH ON TRANSGENDER HEALTH ISSUES ACROSS TEXAS WITH SOME LEVEL OF COORDINATION. THE PROJECT CREATED A PROJECT ECHO SERIES ON COVID-19 AND THE TRANSGENDER AND GENDER DIVERSE COMMUNITIES IN TEXAS. TRANSFORWARD IS ALSO A STANFORD UNIVERSITY PRIDE STUDY/NET COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT PARTNER.TEXASHRH (HURRICANE RESPONSE HUB) IS A TECHNICAL ASSISTANCE CENTER CREATED WITH HURRICANE HARVEY FUNDING. THE HUB IS ONE OF FIVE REGIONAL HUBS AND HAS CREATED EIGHT ELEARNING COURSES RESPONDING TO HURRICANE EVENTS. THE HUB ALSO CREATED A PROJECT ECHO SERIES ON HURRICANES DURING THE COVID-19 PANDEMIC.
