TSHA FULFILLS ITS MISSION THROUGH CORE PROGRAMS: SOUTHWESTERN HISTORICAL QUARTERLY, HANDBOOK OF TEXAS ONLINE, TEXAS ALMANAC, TSHA PRESS, ANNUAL MEETING, AND NUMEROUS EDUCATION PROGRAMS K THROUGH COLLEGE.
To foster the appreciation, understanding, and teaching of Texas history.
THE ASSOCIATION'S PUBLICATIONS INCLUDE THE SOUTHWESTERN HISTORICAL QUARTERLY, MORE THAN 150 SCHOLARLY BOOKS, THE TEXAS ALMANAC, AND THE WELL KNOWN HANDBOOK OF TEXAS ONLINE. THE ONLINE HANDBOOK, ONE OF THE NATIONS PREEMINENT STATE HISTORY ENCYCLOPEDIA, ATTRACT 1.1 MILLION PAGE VIEWS PER MONTH. THROUGH ITS EDUCATION PROGRAMS, THE ASSOCIATION DIRECTLY SERVES NEARLY 68,000 ELEMENTARY THROUGH COLLEGE-AGED STUDENTS EACH YEAR, WHILE INDIRECTLY REACHING AN ADDITIONAL 90,000 THROUGH ITS TEACHER TRAINING OPPORTUNITIES.
A SERIES OF PROGRAMS COMPRISE THE EDUCATIONAL PROGRAMS OF THE ASSOCIATION. OUR MAIN EDUCATIONAL OUTREACH IS COMPRISED OF OUR ANNUAL MEETING WHICH TAKES PLACE OVER THREE DAYS, HAS OVER 600 ATTENDEES ON AVERAGE AN INCLUDES OVER 40 EDUCATIONAL WORKSHOPS OR LECTURES. SECONDARY EDUCATIONAL PROGRAMS INCLUDE THE JUNIOR HISTORIANS AND THE WALTER PRESCOTT WEBB HISTORICAL SOCIETY THAT ARE DEDICATED TO STUDENTS FROM FOURTH GRADE THROUGH COLLEGE. BOTH PROGRAMS WORK THROUGH ESTABLISHED SCHOOL INSTRUCTIONAL PROGRAMS, EMPOWERING STUDENTS TO DISCOVER, RESEARCH, WRITE AND SHARE THEIR UNDERSTANDING OF TEXAS HISTORY. THE TSHA PUBLISHES THE FOLLOWING STUDENT JOURNALS, THE TEXAS HISTORIAN AND TOUCHSTONE.
TEXAS HISTORY DAY IS A COMPETITION AFFILIATED WITH THE NATIONAL HISTORY DAY PROGRAM THAT PROVIDES AN OPPORTUNITY FOR TEXAS, U.S., AND WORLD HISTORY STUDENTS IN GRADES SIX THROUGH TWELVE TO DEMONSTRATE THEIR COMPREHENSION OF HISTORY THROUGH PAPERS, PROJECTS, PERFORMANCES, VIDEO DOCUMENTARIES, AND INTERPRETIVE WEBSITES. AS MANY AS TWENTY THOUSAND YOUNG TEXANS ARE INVOLVED IN THE PROGRAM AT THE LOCAL, REGIONAL, AND STATE LEVEL ANNUALLY. MORE THAN ONE THOUSAND STUDENTS COMPETE IN TEXAS HISTORY DAY, AND SIXTY OR MORE STUDENTS TRAVEL TO NATIONAL HISTORY DAY EACH YEAR AS REPRESENTATIVES OF TEXAS.
