The Shorkey Center specializes in effective individualized educational programs that include early childhood education and therapeutic services focusing on children with special needs.
The Shorkey Center provides a variety of services to children with special needs including physical, occupational, and speech therapy; direct education services for children with autism and related disorders, and parental assistance and support.
The Center provides pediatric physical and occupational therapy for children who were born with physical disabilities or who develop disabilities as the result of disease or injury. The children develop appropriate motor functioning and skills that enable them to participate in everyday activities at home and school. The therapists also work with parents so they can continue the exercises at home to maximize the benefits. During the year ended June 30, 2019, the Center provided over 14,000 units of physical and occupational therapy.
The Center employs speech language pathologists (SLP) who work with children to improve skills that allow them to communicate more effectively or who have oral motor problems causing eating and swallowing difficulties. During the year ended June 30, 2019, the Center provided over 28,000 units of speech therapy.
The Center provides two programs to assist families of children with autism, ADD, ADHD, and other educational issues. The Community Outreach program evaluates each child then uses the principles of Applied Behavior Analysis to address the specific social, behavioral or academic delays. The program also works with parents to develop the skills to stabilize the child when he is not at school. For children who are not able to attend school, the Kids in Days School program is certified by the Texas Education Agency as a Non-Public Day School. The program also uses the principles and techniques of ABA to develop and implement a program that addresses each child's specific learning or behavioral deficits.
