TO IMPROVE THE HEALTH AND WELL-BEING OF INDIVIDUALS AND FAMILIES THROUGH THERAPUTIC PROGRAMS INCORPORATING THE POWERFUL CONNECTION BETWEEN DOGS AND HUMANS.
TO IMPROVE THE HEALTH AND WELL-BEING OF INDIVIDUALS AND FAMILIES THROUGH THERAPEUTIC PROGRAMS HARNESSING OUR POWERFUL CONNECTION WITH DOGS. INCLUDES FREE SERVICE DOGS FOR VETERANS AND PET THERAPY IN OUR COMMUNITY AT SCHOOLS, HOSPITALS AND NURSING HOMES.
HOUNDS FOR HEROES SERVICE DOG PROGRAM IMPROVES THE LIVES OF VETERANS LIVING WITH POST-TRAUMATIC STRESS AND OR MOBILITY IMPAIRMENTS (I.E., REQUIRES A CANE, WALKER OR WHEELCHAIR) CAUSED BY THEIR SERVICE TO OUR COUNTRY. DOGS THAT CHANGE CAREERS MID-TRAINING IMPROVE THE LIVES OF MILITARY FAMILIES WITH A DISABLED FAMILY MEMBER. DOGS THAT ARE NOT AN IDEAL FIT FOR PLACEMENT WITH DISABLED INDIVIDUALS ARE PLACED AS FAMILY PETS. SERVICE DOGS ARE TRAINED SEVEN DAYS A WEEK FOR 12-24 MONTHS, DEPENDING ON THE TASKS REQUIRED BY THE VETERAN AND THE AGE OF THE DOG AT THE START OF TRAINING. IN 2020, 1 PROGRAM TRAINED SERVICE DOGS WAS PLACED WITH A VETERAN. THREE DOGS WERE PLACED WITH VETERANS AS TRAINED EMOTIONAL SUPPORT DOGS. TWO DOGS WERE PLACED WITH VETERANS AS PETS. ADDITIONALLY, 3 DOGS WERE PLACED WITH CIVILIANS AS TRAINED EMOTIONAL SUPPORT DOGS. AT THE END OF THE YEAR, TWO ADULT LABRADOR RETRIEVERS WERE IN THE FINAL STAGES OF TRAINING. THE FINAL STAGE OF PAPERWORK WAS SUBMITTED TO ASSISTANCE DOGS INTERNATIONAL IN JUNE. IN AUGUST, WE WERE OFFICIALLY MOVED TO THE FINAL STAGE OF THE ACCREDITATION PROCESS. DURING THE PANDEMIC, WE CONTINUED TO SUPPORT OUR VETERANS VIA ZOOM GROUP CLASSES, ONLINE NETWORKING MEETINGS AND PRIVATE LESSONS.
FAMILY PET TRAINING AND K9 KIDS SUMMER CAMPS - DUE TO COVID, WE SHUT DOWN OUR FACILITY FROM MARCH TO SEPTEMBER FOR IN- PERSON CLASSES. WE WERE ABLE TO HOST CHILDREN FROM 47 CITIES ACROSS THE COUNTRY USING ZOOM AND PROVIDING THE SUMMER CAMP EXPERIENCE ONLINE. WE HAD CHILDREN FROM BROOKLYN NEW YORK TO SACRAMENTO CALIFORNIA. PET AND SERVICE DOG FOUNDATION LEVEL CLASSES WERE HELD ONLINE. WE OPENED FROM OCTOBER TO EARLY DECEMBER FOR IN-PERSON CLASSES AT OUR OUTDOOR CLASSROOMS.
BOW WOW THERAPY DOG PROGRAM - HIGHLY TRAINED DOGS AND THEIR HANDLERS BRING JOY AND COMFORT TO PATIENTS IN HOSPITALS, EMPLOYEES IN STRESSFUL WORK ENVIRONMENTS AND SENIORS IN NURSING HOMES. THEY IMPROVE READING SCORES AND SELF-ESTEEM FOR AT-RISK READERS IN LOCAL ELEMENTARY SCHOOLS. THEY ALSO LISTEN TO CHILDREN READ ALOUD IN LIBRARIES. DUE TO COVID, IN-PERSON VISITS WITH CLIENTS WERE SUSPENDED ON MARCH 8TH. WE ASSISTED KIDS IN LEARNING TO READ BY PROVIDING WEEKLY RECORDED STORY TIMES WITH THE READING DOGS USING VIDEO AND YOUTUBE FOR DELIVERY.
