Organizations Filed Purposes: To provide and promote affordable, high-quality dispute resolution services and training to the Montgomery County area.

Mediation: Beginnng in March and extending thoughout 2020, the COVID-19 pandemic resulted in statewide and national emergency declarations. Stay-at-home orders, capacity limits and safety concerns all meant that Dispute resolution Center of Montgomery County, Inc (DRC-MC) could no longer conduct in-person mediations. Therefore, DRC-MC Staff and volunteers were retrained and pivoted to doing Zoom mediations in March 2020. Mediations via Zoom require much more staff participation and assistance and are more labor intensive. Despite the many challenges that the pandemic presented, DRC-MC staff and volunteers still completed mediation for nearly 4000 families, businesses and/or agencies in FY 2019/2020. In addition to removing a significant number of cases from the Montgomery County court dockets through settlement, these mediators also prevented community disputes from escalating by helping people resolve their conflicts, rebuild relationships and restore communications. The DRC-MC offers pro bono mediations to assist victims of sexual violence, child abuse and neglect, domestic violence and those who cannot afford legal assistance. The DRC-MC completed over 279 pro bono mediations including nearly 100 mediations for abused/neglected children in the custody of Children's Protective Services. During the 2019/2020 fiscal year, DRC-MC volunteers contributed over 2,500 hours of service to the community valued at over $228,000.

Training/Education and Outreach: As noted above, the COVID-19 pandemic provided serious challenges to DRC-MC staff and volunteers. Despite these challenges, in fiscal year 2019/2020 the DRC-MC still provided conflict resolution education and outreach to over 19,000, individuals and sponsored the Sixth Annual Conflict Resolution Day Bookmark Art Contest. Seventy Montgomery County schools (including home schools) participated in this contest and 2,033 students in grades K-8 submitted original artwork depicting creative ways to resolve conflicts peacefully and say "no" to bullies. Working in connection with The Woodlands Art Council and the Conroe Art League, the DRC-MC and its partners exhibited permanent art works made from the bookmarks submissions to educate Montgomery County residents about ways to resolve conflicts peacefully. The DRC-MC also distributed nearly 13,000 anti-bullying bookmarks drawn by Art Contest winners throughout Montgomery County to promote peaceful resolution of disputes. The DRC-MC also donated over 43 anti-bullying books to students in Montgomery County schools. Significantly, although it had only five days' notice, the DRC-MC trained its volunteers to do mediations via Zoom. As a result, twenty-four (24) experienced volunteer mediators continuted doing mediations and training classes throughout FY2019/2020,including conducting and/or assisting with General Mediation Training, Family Mediaiton Training, Child Protective Services Mediation Training and Peer Mediation training.
