SERVE THE BACHMAN LAKE COMMUNITY WITH QUALITY FAITH-BASED PROGRAMS TARGETING SPECIFIC COMMUNITY NEEDS, STARTING WITH EDUCATION OF PARENTS AND CHILDREN, EMOTIONAL WELL-BEING AND MATERIAL NEEDS.
EARLY CHILDHOOD EDUCATION PROGRAM - SERVES 32 LOW INCOME HISPANIC CHILDREN FROM BACHMAN LAKE COMMUNITY WITH EARLY EDUCATION CLASSES. THIS PROGRAM FOCUSES ON LANGUAGE ACQUISITION PRE-MATH SKILLS, GROSS AND FINE MOTOR DEVELOPMENT, SOCIAL SKILLS DEVELOPMENT, AND EXECUTIVE FUNCTION. CLASSES MEET FROM 9:30-11:30AM MON-THU. MONDAYS ARE FOCUSED ON TRAINING PARENTS TO BE THEIR CHILDS PRIMARY EDUCATOR AT HOME. PARENT WORKSHOPS FOCUS ON CHILD DEVELOPMENT, PARENT TALK (3 TS FROM THIRTY MILLION WORDS INITIATIVE), PLAY WITH ME, EVERY CHILD READY TO READ, EMOTIONAL DEVELOPMENT, DISCIPLINING YOUR CHILD, SLEEP PATTERNS AND CHILDRENS HEALTH. EACH WORKSHOP INCLUDES PRACTICAL HANDS-ON APPLICATIONS SO THAT PARENTS AND CHILDREN LEARN SKILLS TOGETHER AND ARE EQUIPPED TO PRACTICE THESE SKILLS AT HOM. PROGRAM HAS 6:1 STUDENT TEACHER RATIO, WHICH ALLOWS US TO GIVE INDIVIDUALIZED ATTENTION TO EACH STUDENT. STUDENTS ARE EVALUATED TO MONITOR PROGRESS AT THE BEGINNING AND END OF EACH SCHOOL YEAR. ABOUT 80% OF STUDENTS ATTENDING REGULARLY MAKE SIGNIFICANT PROGRESS TOWARDS KINDERGARTEN.
ELEMENTARY SCHOOL LITERACY PROGRAM - THERE ARE 2 PARTS TO THE ELEMENTARY SCHOOL LITERACY PROGRAM. THE FIRST IS THE AFTER SCHOOL READING PROGRAM, WHICH BEGAN IN THE FALL OF 2018. THIS PROGRAM RAN 2 DAYS A WEEK FOR 13 CHILDREN IN 1ST-5TH GRADE. THIS PROGRAM PROVIDED READING INTERVENTION FOR LOW-INCOME STUDENTS AND WAS STAFFED BY 2 CASA STAFF MEMBERS. THE SECOND PART OF THE ELEMENTARY SCHOOL LITERACY PROGRAM IS SUMMER AT THE LAKE. THIS SUMMER READING ENRICHMENT PROGRAM FOR K-5TH GRADERS USES TRAINED TEENAGERS AS LITERACY COUNSELORS. THE PROGRAMS GOAL IS TO HELP UNDERSERVED ELEMENTARY STUDENTS IN BACHMAN LAKE MAINTAIN OR IMPROVE THEIR READING PROFICIENCY OVER THE SUMMER. THE TEEN COUNSELORS RECEIVE LEADERSHIP AND LITERACY TRAINING TO RUN THE CAMPS. 87 STUDENTS WERE ENROLLED IN THE SUMMER OF 2019, AND 98.6% OF THOSE WHO COMPLETED THE PROGRAM AVOIDED SUMMER LEARNING LOSS.
ADULT EDUCATION PROGRAM - INCLUDES ENGLISH CLASSES AND FINANCIAL LITERACY CLASSES FOR LOW INCOME HISPANIC ADULTS FROM THE BACHMAN LAKE COMMUNITY. 23 VOLUNTEER TEACHERS TEACH 224 ADULTS IN 4 LEVELS OF INSTRUCTION, BOTH AM AND PM. MORE THAN 50% OF OUR ESL STUDENTS ADVANCE BY ONE LEVEL EACH YEAR WHICH MEANS THEY HAVE MADE SIGNIFICANT PROGRESS IN READING, SPEAKING AND WRITING IN ENGLISH. IN ADDITION TO ENGLISH CLASSES WE OFFER 30 WORKSHOPS TO PROGRAM PARTICIPANTS. THE WORKSHOPS ARE FOCUSED ON LIFE SKILLS AND INCLUDE SUBJECTS SUCH AS CULTURAL ASSIMILATION, LANGUAGE LEARNING, FINANCIAL LITERACY, HEALTH, NUTRITION, DEPRESSION, GRIEF, FAMILY DYNAMICS, SCHOOL CHOICE, INTERNET SAFETY AND CHILD DEVELOPMENT. AFTER CLASS, WE ALSO OFFER GROUPS FOR BIBLE STUDY AND PRAYERS. ALL STUDENTS ARE INVITED BUT NOT REQUIRED TO PARTICIPATE IN FAITH-BASED ACTIVITIES.
